FOSS4G SotM Oceania is a regional event that brings together the open source geospatial community.

Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G):

  • FOSS4G is the label for Open Source Geospatial Foundation conferences (OSGeo - http://osgeo.org)
  • OSGeo supports development and adoption of open source geospatial technology internationally
  • FOSS4G reflects the broader open source software philosophy (see https://opensource.com/resources/what-open-source).

State of the Map (SotM)

  • SotM is the label for OpenStreetMap Foundation conferences (https://www.openstreetmap.org)
  • The OpenStreetMap project is a long-running effort to build a free and open editable map of the world
  • SotM is a platform to discuss the wider project strategy, support tools, and share inspiring case studies

To focus Oceania’s open source geospatial efforts, we have combined these two conferences. FOSS4G SotM Oceania gives Oceania a link to global communities of developers and users; supported by the OSGeo foundation and the OpenStreetMap Foundation.

Exposure to a dynamic and growing community

  • The open source geospatial community is growing steadily year by year
  • Progressively more organisations are utilizing QGIS, PostGIS and GDAL in their geospatial toolset
  • OpenStreetMap is growing with 40,000 monthly active contributors
  • Apple, Facebook, Grab and Microsoft are all working with the community to improve the map

Sponsorship gives you prominent exposure to each of these players and allows you to both advertise and demonstrate your organisation’s fit within the community.

Support the development of open source geospatial tools

FOSS4G SotM Oceania is a non-profit event. All surplus funds are reinvested into smaller regional events and initiatives to increase participation and contribution quality.

Support an inclusive conference

In 2019 sponsorship enabled us to reduce ticket prices for students and community members in need. This helps ensure diversity of ideas and perspectives which is especially important for sustaining the open source community.

The open source software community runs on an economy of giving.

The Good Mojo concept gives people and organisations the opportunity to donate whatever they can afford, with contributions directly funding diversity and accessibility initiatives.

The types of initiatives that Good Mojo aims to support in 2020 include:

  • Funding a travel grant program that would enable those in under-represented communities with a financial disadvantage to attend. This initiative is particularly focused on citizens of Pacific Island Countries and indigenous communities in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Organising networking events for under-represented groups.
  • Initiatives to create a child-friendly conference.
  • Reducing the cost of attendance for community members who are self funded.

If you choose donate Good Mojo funds, you will be identified as a ‘Good Mojo’ contributor on the conference website and in conference proceedings.

A working group was established at the conclusion of FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2018 and tasked with investigating a suitable entity to support Oceania’s open geospatial community.

The working group has formed a not-for-profit called OSGeo Oceania. This entity will support the long-term sustainability of the community and formalise relationships with OSGeo and the OpenStreetMap Foundation.

There is also a dedicated conference committee focused on the delivery of a successful FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2020.
