138 of 297

ALBERT DURER

Was actually a printmaker but also did this famous self portrait. He tried to make himself “christ-like” in order to say that his talents were given to him by God.

139 of 297

GUSTAVE COURBET

Depicts himself worried and his hands tearing at his hair. Wanted to convey himself as a tortured artist and genius, struggling for recognition, politics and money to earn a living.

140 of 297

CLAUDE MONET

Purposefully left the canvas unfinished. Used blurred brushstrokes so he was out of focus. Unlike his very colorful artwork he purposefully used mostly balck and white dull colors.

Look at his expression-staring at the viewer, not smiling.

141 of 297

VAN GOGH

Bright and colorful yet shows himself bandaged because he cut off his own ear. Why did he pick a hat and coat? Why did he chose to show us his easel and a Japanese print behind him?

142 of 297

EDVARD MUNCH

Known for his dark and dreary depictions be decided to add a skeleton arm in this dark piece utilizing negative space.

143 of 297

FRIDA KAHLO

No shortness for symbolism here. Her concepts usually had themes of foliage, wildlife and suffering.

What do you think the dead mockingbird symbolizes?

What about the thorns digging into her neck?

144 of 297

REMBRANDT

He made over 90 self portraits in his career.

Note the texture and light, a lighting set up is named after his style of light use in painting.

145 of 297

MARCEL DUCHAMP

It’s a torn piece of paper, where you’d think was his signature it actually says “Marcel Tore This Quickly”

146 of 297

MICHELANGELO

Located in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican, St. Bart is holding the skin of a human, Michelangelo made the face of this skin his self portrait.

147 of 297

SALVADOR DALI

Soft Self Portrait with Bacon was inspired by Michelangelo’s Self Portrait, comparing himself to his breakfast food.

148 of 297

Barkley Hendricks

Contemporary Artist also a photographer and sculptor made life size portraits of peers. In his self portraits he chose to be nude and also one where his out fades in the background. What does the lack of clothing say?

High Key & Low Key Lighting - When?

High Key Lighting:

  • Mostly used in portrait, wedding, newborn and fashion photography
  • Photos of business professionals; for baby or newborn photography; for fashion shoots; professional or fun close-ups or shoots.
    • Weddings, especially photos of the bride, are perfect for high key lighting.
  • For advertising-related photoshoots (brochures, booklets, posters, billboards, etc.)

Low Key Lighting:

  • Dramatic close-ups, like when you’re trying to capture emotion.
    • A close-up of someone crying is a good example.
  • When you’re trying to emphasize part of a subject’s face or body, for instance the subject’s blue green eyes.
  • If you want your subject to look dramatic in black & white.

After 30 continuous flashes at full power,

the flash should be cooled down for about 3 minutes. Overheating will occur if it is used continuously without cooling down.

261 of 297

Do not keep using the modeling lamp for a long time; otherwise flammable accessories attaching to flash head, e.g. softbox will get burnt. A 10-minute time is recommended in this case. After 10 minutes, cool it down for 1 minute.

262 of 297

When using a snoot, do not keep the modeling lamp on for a long time or fire too frequently (not over six times for one minute) Overheating will result in damages for strobe housing and/or studio light.
