The basics

General Care

You are responsible for any damage to the Chromebook - $$$

  • Keep the Chromebook away from food and liquids.
  • Do not add stickers to or write on the Chromebook except for the label already added by the district.
  • Don’t drop the Chromebook! This can result in a broken screen, damaged case, and more.
  • Don’t pick at the keys! Breaking off keys will result in a need for repairs.

A little more - Best Practices

  • Keep the stylus in a pencil case when not in use. Styluses get bent or broken easily! Keeping it safe inside a case in your bag also prevents theft of the stylus.
    • Note: The styluses for new middle school Chromebooks need to be charged in the “garage” periodically. If yours stops working, it may just need a boost of energy for 5-10 minutes.
  • Power off the Chromebook regularly. This keeps it updated and working properly.
  • Charge the Chromebook at home or bring your charger to school. There are limited chargers available on campus.

Basic “maintenance”

Chromebooks automatically download updates to the operating system but must be restarted for them to be installed.

  • Closing the Chromebook lid only puts the Chromebook on standby. You must select the power button to install updates.
  • If you see a message that an update has been downloaded, power off the Chromebook when you are finished working.
  • If you notice the Chromebook is slow or “acting funny,” try restarting it.
  • If restarting does not help, go see the Learning Commons Tech at your school for help.

Optional Chromebook Insurance

Families can choose to purchase insurance annually for each student device (current cost is $44 per device per year).

Families who purchase device insurance will be able to return their device to the District for repairs, and if necessary, receive a replacement device at no charge. (Note: Insurance does not cover the stylus or charger.)

Replacement costs

Families that choose to not purchase insurance may need to replace a device that is broken, in the same manner that a damaged textbook requires replacement.

The stylus and charger that come with the Chromebook are not covered by the insurance.

More about fees for damage and replacement

Where can I review the fees for damage or replacement?

Fees are entered into Aeries and can be viewed in the Parent Portal in the Student Info section.

How do I pay the fees assessed?

Fees are paid at the student’s school (Finance Office, Student Store, main office, etc). Please contact the school to find out where to go on campus to pay fees.
