For Teachers Only (Info)

Welcome to the Skills Ontario Introduction Slide Deck!

This resource was created so that you can introduce Skills Ontario to your students ahead of them participating in the Contests.

There is a different slide deck for each Contest containing information about the specific Contest the students will be participating in.

Feel free to present this to your class, club or group to get them ready for the Skills ON program for 2024!

Teachers are encouraged to support student learning, but please refrain from directly guiding students with answers - unless it is safety related!

Please print a copy of the SCOPE for each group when introducing the Contest!

Welcome to Skills Ontario!

Skills Ontario is an awesome and exciting experience.

Give your teacher a quick Hoo-Raa, SNAPS or even a Bingo-Bongo for bringing these activities to life in your classroom!

Over the next few weeks you will be working with your group to solve a real-world challenge using physical and digital tools.

The purpose of these activities are to expose you to new experiences and give you an idea of possible things you can do in the future, in high school and beyond.

Be ready to have an open mind, collaborate with your team, persevere through difficulties, and most important - to have fun learning something new!

Why Participate in Skills Ontario?

“Skills gives exposure to the possibilities of different career paths that are available. Ones that are unique to each individual student; including careers they might not have been aware of. It also allows for them to take pride in skill sets that they have, just like they take pride in their ability to participate in a sport or a given art form.” -Organizer

“Participating alongside your peers can show where your skill set is in relation to others. The value this brings to the skilled trades overall is immense. Getting more feedback on my work from contest judges allowed me to improve my skills.” -Student

“Students get to test their skills acquired through the curriculum on real-world assignments in an industry environment using real equipment. In addition, students are able to practice for many hours to prepare for Skills Ontario, which enhances their hands-on skills.” -Teacher

Let’s Do This! Now What?!

The contest you are participating in has a challenge called a SCOPE.

A SCOPE is a technical term that is used in project management to define the features and functions of a project and how it is going to be made.

OK - that was a mouthful.

A SCOPE basically means an overview about what the challenge is and how you can solve it. It includes the types of materials you can use, safety rules and scoring rubrics.

READ them carefully! GREATNESS is in the DETAILS!

Video Submissions

Your class will select the BEST GROUP’S PROJECT to make a video to submit to the Google Classroom before February 29th @ 4pm.

The best videos from across the DDSB will be invited to the Regional Competition at the Tribute Community Centre in Oshawa on April 4th!

Each Contest has slightly different requirements for the video, so please take a look at the SCOPE for video requirement specifics.

In general you can use a Google Slide Deck to have all of the required video parts. Include the written information, photos and video clips that are needed for the Contest you are competing in. Teachers can help with this step!
