On World Water Day, Communities Lead the Fight Against Water Scarcity

Water scarcity and erratic rainfall continue to threaten agriculture and rural livelihoods in West Bengal. Purulia and Bankura received 1,269.3 mm and 1199.7 mm of rainfall in 2022 respectively as per the report titled "Rainfall Statistics of India 2022" published by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Groundwater in Purulia is crucial but depleting, with levels ranging from 0.80 to 10.1 mbgl. Over-extraction in key blocks is disrupting balance, worsening the water crisis as per a report titled “Water Resource Management in Semi-arid Purulia District of West Bengal" by Amit Bera and Shubhamita Das.
Recognizing these challenges, interactive discussions and hands-on exercises were conducted on World Water Day in Hura, Purulia, and Taldangra, Bankura. The sessions engaged over 60 participants, including local farmers, Panchayat leaders, and government officials. The sessions emphasized the importance of groundwater conservation and sustainable water use to enhance long-term water security.
In Hura, Purulia, discussions saw the presence of Assistant ADA Mr. Ram Kumar Mahato, Block Technology Manager Mr. Sudeep Panda, and Panchayat Pradhan Mr. Alomoni Mahato.
Similarly, in Taldangra, Bankura, participants engaged in discussions led by Assistant Director of Horticulture Mr. Priyaranjan Koley, Block Technology Manager Mr. Anirban Das Chakraborty, and Panchayat Pradhan Mr. Arun Ghosh. Mr. Koley stressed that water scarcity is a growing concern and that involving local communities in water budgeting and sustainable agricultural practices is essential for long-term security.
Through these multi-location engagements, participants across both Bankura and Purulia gained hands-on experience in water conservation strategies. Cropping techniques that maximize yield while reducing water dependency were introduced. Additionally, participatory exercises helped communities assess their current water usage and identify localized strategies for improving efficiency.
