Do not come early or stay late to use the workshop without permission & supervision. Get pre-authorized permission and arrange to have an authorized mentor present to supervise ALWAYS !

Appropriate Dress in a Safe Shop
(Entanglement Hazards)
Hair - Long hair must be tied back & secure. If you have never seen an accident with power equipment and long hair, consider yourself lucky. You haven’t lost sleep with that nightmare image. Tend to your hair and watch out for others.
Clothing - Please wear clothes that fit well.�No loose clothing, unbuttoned shirts, or long sleeves. Hoodie drawstrings are potentially as dangerous as the nightmare described above (in the section on “hair”). Cotton clothes are appropriate for working in a shop environment. No jewelry near power equipment.
Shoes - Appropriate shoes, no high heels, no open toes, good traction, stable foothold. Shoes must be tied or fastened.

Personal Protection Equipment
(around robots, machinery & tools)
Eye Protection - ALWAYS wear Approved safety glasses with side shields in the shop area. If the robot is running outside the shop (trials, etc.), ALL people present in the room are required to have safety glasses.
Foot Protection - Closed-toe, stable shoes only. See “Appropriate Dress” section.
Hearing Protection Use it when in doubt. Metal Saw, CNC (earbuds don’t count)
Dust Mask - use if creating a lot of dust - especially MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) - if you are creating smoke you probably are doing something wrong.
Gloves - NEVER WEAR GLOVES AROUND SPINDLES OF POWER TOOLS. However, some circumstances are appropriate (around chemicals, sharp metals, etc.). ASK !!!
INDUSTRIAL SHOP HYGIENE
Common sense things we must do EVERY DAY
ALWAYS keep work areas clean - put tools away when not using them or after using them - EVERY TIME.
No standing on stools, chairs, milk crates, etc... We have step ladders!
Don’t string extension cords or air hoses across the floor or at waist height.
Don’t leave material laying around, especially round stock.�Don’t leave tools on the floor - even for a minute.
Always secure parts before you perform cutting, drilling, filing or sanding operations.
Secure robot with wheels raised.
How to Safely Lift a Robot
(or anything heavy, for that matter…)
Plan and communicate the entire lifting operation.
Where are we going? Where will it be placed?
How will we get there? Are there any obstacles in the path?
Is everybody strong enough?
Robots weigh more than 100-pounds! Tool chests are heavier.
Secure your grip.
Watch out for sharp edges (gloves?)
Count your lift - 1, 2, 3 - all lifters count, all start lifting when 3 is said
Lift with your legs, not your back! Use a spotter. Get out of the way!
Our safety last year was a B+
