November Freebie: �Interactive Word Spots

This activity can be done as a whole class, in small groups, with partners, or independently. It could be done as a center rotation for reading or word work practice/review or could be used as an informal formative or summative assessment.

To prepare the interactive word spots: 

  • Type either the high-frequency words or words that follow the phonics pattern you are practicing in class in each spot where it says “word”.
  • Print each word spot and cut it out.

***An alternative would be to delete the text boxes so they are blank. Then print and cut out the spots. Laminate them so that you can write on them with a whiteboard marker. Then you can erase and change out the words every week.

Set-up:

  • Place the spots around the classroom, hallway, or even on the playground.
  • Word spots could be placed either on the ground or taped to a wall.

To use:

  1. Show students each word spot and model how to perform each action.
  2. Have students walk around to the interactive word spots.
  3. Students should say and spell the word as they follow the picture directions on the cards. For example, if the word is “cat” and the word spot shows a picture of a child doing jumping jacks, students should go up to the card, say the word, and spell “cat” as they do jumping jacks. If the word spot showed a picture of a child singing, students should sing the word and sing the spelling of each letter. There are 14 word spot actions included: stand on 1 leg, jumping jacks, sing, stretch, jump in one spot, turn your head from side to side, shake and twist, jog in place, whisper, wave, raise your hand, and 2 free choice spots for students to make up their own actions.
  4. As students are walking around reading and spelling, the teacher could be working with individual students or small groups or could be walking around listening and taking notes to determine mastery or reteaching needed.

***An additional extension idea would be to have students carry whiteboards or notebooks with them to each spot. Once they are done saying and spelling the words with the actions, students could also practice writing the words on their whiteboards or in their notebooks. They could also practice saying or writing the words in sentences.
