Origins of 汉字

The oracle bones, 甲骨文 jiǎ gǔ wén, were buried underground for thousands of years until about 100 years ago. When a scholar got sick, he went to the pharmacy to get “dragon bones” for his medication. On these “dragon bone” pieces, there were carvings. The scholar knew that these weren’t natural, but were carved because they were so intricate. The scholar then went back to the pharmacy to purchase all of the “dragon bones” in order to study them. These so called “dragon bones” were actually oracle bones that contained the oldest form of the Chinese written language.
