Goalie in the Crease

  • Goalie is in the crease when ANY part of his body is touching the crease

  • Once he gains possession in the crease, he may remain in the crease for 4 seconds

Defensive players, other than a properly equipped goalkeeper, MAY NOT enter his own crease:

  • with the intent of blocking a shot
  • or acting as a goalkeeper

Contact with possession:

    • Play on! Allow pass to complete or ends if goalie steps out of crease.

    • Award Free Clear if pass incomplete

    • Goalie can follow through on pass but may be called for a slash

Goalie Interference-No Possession

Contact without possession:

    • Short Play on!
    • Ends when goalie gets possession.
    • Stop play if there are defenders near!
    • NOT A FREE CLEAR ; award possession

    • Attack can play a loose ball in crease if they do not touch the goalie or his stick. Goalie cannot initiate the contact

    • Reminder: Clamping the ball is not goalie possession!

    • Scorer’s crosse found to be illegal.
    • Foul on the scoring team before the shot.

It is a violation if:

Stalling

Ending a Stall Warning

  • Offense steps out of the box or loose ball leaves the box (includes on the line)

(not the result of a VALID shot or deflected by the defense)

  • Defense gains possession.
  • Valid shot hits goalie, goalies equipment or pipe
  • Goal is scored.
  • Period ends resulting in faceoff.

Stall warning is not waived with under 2 minutes with a goal differential of 4 or fewer

  • Key elements: Thrusting, hands apart and away from the body, watch for riding up into neck.

Checks Involving theοΏ½ Head or Neck

  • Key elements:
    • Initiating contact to an opponent's head or neck with a cross-check, or with any part of his body or stick.
    • A player shall not block an opponent with the head or initiate contact with the head (spearing).
  • Penalty
    • 1, 2 or 3 minutes Non Releasable depending on severity; official’s discretion. Excessively violent may result in an ejection. (new 1 minute for indirect contact that starts below and follows through to the head or neck)

Slashing

  • Key elements:
    • Striking a player in any part of the body with the crosse from the head to the end cap.
    • Swinging a crosse at an opponent with deliberate viciousness or reckless abandon, regardless of whether there is contact.
    • No penalty if done in the act of passing, shooting or scooping the ball.
  • Penalty
    • 1, 2, or 3 minutes depending on severity.
    • Most incidents are releasable

    • Obstructing a player below the waist

  • Key elements:
    • Any excessively violent act, holding, or pushing.
    • Deliberate and excessively violent contact made against an offensive player who has established a screen. i.e. intentionally running through a screen.
    • Any deliberate and excessively violent avoidable act, whether it be with the body or crosse. This may include a legal body check.
    • A check delivered via a punching blow.

    • 1, 2, or 3 minutes depending on severity

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

  • Key elements:
    • Non-Releasable
      • Arguing (incessantly) with an official.
      • Using threatening, profane, or obscene language or gestures.
      • Intentionally grabbing the ball or crosse on a faceoff.
      • Baiting or calling undue attention to oneself.
    • Releasable
      • Repeatedly committing the same technical foul.
      • Defense (2nd team infraction) entering crease to defend a shot.
      • Deliberately delaying substitution to gain an advantage.
      • A coach is on field and obstructs play (or official)
  • Penalty
    • 1, 2, or 3 minutes depending on severity.

Illegal crosse

  • Illegal crosse-
    • 2 minutes non-releaseable- may be fixed and returned to game
    • Do not demonstrate to coach
  • Any goal just scored by a player with an illegal crosse is disallowed
  • If player adjusts crosse when crosse is requested
    • Automatic 1 minute Non-releasable
    • Also enforce normal penalty if crosse is illegal.

Illegal equipment

  • Player equipment that does not conform to rules
  • Key elements:
    • Most equipment penalties are 1 minute Non-Releasable
      • Cut gloves or cut holes in palm
        • Holes must be taped over. No penalty if due to normal wear. FIX IT (or can’t play)
      • No shoulder pads or arm pads
        • Does not apply to goalie. Goalie must have throat protector and chest protector.
    • Proper equipment must be worn during play.
      • Equipment must be worn as intended (new for 2024)
      • Players on the sidelines need to keep their helmets on.

Fouling Out

  • Key elements:
    • Any one player accumulating 5 minutes of PERSONAL foul.
    • This is a disqualification, not an ejection.
    • A substitute can enter after the penalty time is served.

Ejection

  • Key elements:
    • Deliberately striking or attempting to strike anyone.(Swing and miss, you’re done!)
    • Leaving the bench area during an altercation.
    • Use of tobacco or smokeless tobacco.
    • Second non-releasable, unsportsmanlike foul.
    • Any action deemed by the officials to be flagrant misconduct.
    • You must notify your assignor and file a report.
  • Penalty
    • 3 minute Non-Releasable
    • Ejection for remainder of game
    • Ejected coach must leave premises
    • Ejected coach is 1 minute non-releasable
