Echo these words and listen for the sound that’s the same in each word.

What sound do you hear that’s the same in each word? (/ar/). What do you see that might make the /ar/ sound? (a and r). Let’s code these words. Code the a’s with breves and show how it won’t work when read. The bossy r is changing the sound the vowel normally makes. It is giving an unexpected sound. Two letters that come together to make an “unexpected” sound are called combinations. We code them with arcs.

Sometimes these letters look like combinations, but they won’t act as combinations. When a combination is followed by a vowel or the letter r, it is usually not acting as a combination.

Let’s try a combination followed by the letter r. In the word ‘derrick,’ combination er is followed by the letter r, so it makes more of a short vowel sound. Just remember that when you see a combination followed by a vowel or the letter r, it may not be acting as a combination.
