As people move through life, there are different stages that they encounter. From kindergarten to primary and high school, tertiary education or training to the world of work and finally retirement, we all experience changes in our responsibilities, friendships and other relationships throughout our life.

With each stage comes new and different responsibilities. Initially we have our parents or guardians who are in charge of us and responsible for us, then when we reach puberty and high school we look for more independence. As older adults we find boyfriends and girlfriends who we become responsible to and maybe eventually spouses. Finally, some of us may enter parenthood where we not only are we responsible for ourselves but also life which now depends on us and al the responsibility that comes with such an important and special role of being a parent.

Puberty

- The period of time when person changes from child to an adult.

- Puberty changes a person’s body, feelings and behaviour.

- Triggered by the release of hormones from the brain, and also hormones from the ovaries or testicles.

Parts of the female reproductive system include:

Ovary: The ovaries exist as a pair (one on the right of the body and one on the left) and they release ova (eggs) which are the female sex cells. In humans they also make the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Each month from puberty until around the age of 60 an ovary releases an egg.

Oviduct: There are two oviducts, also called the fallopian tubes. Each oviduct attaches to a side of the uterus and connects to an ovary. The oviducts catch the egg released by the ovary each month. Sometimes ovaries might drop 2 eggs. It is in the oviduct that an egg can be fertilised. Oviducts are about as wide as a piece of spaghetti.

Uterus: The uterus is shaped like an upside-down pear, with a thick lining and muscular walls. It is hollow to allow a fertilised egg to grow into a baby, also called a foetus. If the egg is fertilised, the walls of the uterus thicken to protect and develop the growing (foetus). If it is not fertilised, each month the lining is shed and comes out of the body as blood. This is called a period.

Cervix: The cervix is a narrow part of the uterus where it joins to the vagina.

Vagina: The internal canal that leads from the vulva to the uterus (womb). It is the pathway for blood to leave the body each month if the egg is unfertilised. It also receives the sperm from the male for fertilisation and is the common pathway for babies to take to be born.

Clitoris: The clioris is a small spongy section of tissue that is very sensitive.

Vulva: The folds of skin that surround the opening of the vagina.

The male reproductive system has many parts. They include:

Scrotum: The sac (pouch) of skin that hold the testicles. It helps keep their temperature cool. This is important for sperm to survive.

Testicles: Two small oval glands that hang in a pouch of skin (scrotum) behind the penis.From when a male reaches puberty, the testicles produce the male sex cells (sperm) and the hormone testosterone.

Epididymis: A place where sperm are stored while they finish growing.

Vas deferens: A pathway for sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.

The seminal vesicles and prostate gland: Nourish the sperm with fructose (seminal vesicle) and prepare the pathway for them to take Prostate gland).

Cowper’s gland: Prepares the pathway out of the urethra for sperm - urine can kill sperm so this gland neutralises the urine.

Penis: External sexual organ in males. Sperm and urine (pee or wee) is released through the penis..

Urinary bladder: A hollow space that collects and stores urine until it leaves the body.

Urethra: A pathway for semen (sperm and fluids) and urine out of the body.

Periods

Menstruation is commonly called a period and is a flow of blood from the vagina.

Girls often get their first period at 12 or 13, but this can happen earlier or later.

When periods start, they may be irregular at first.

Managing embarrassing events - Girls

Beginning to have periods is a normal and healthy part of puberty for girls.

Girls need to be prepared.

There are different ways to manage a period

e.g. pads and liners, tampons

Girls may wish to purchase their own sanitary items or have a trusted adult help them.

**GIRLS ONLY** - You may choose to store your sanitary items in a case that is fairy discreet, like a pencilcase. This way you will be prepared if your period starts at school or you have your period already, you will have spares in case you need them during the day. Any supermarket or chemist should sell pads or tampons.

**BOYS ONLY** You may notice that some of the girls choose to store their sanitary items in a case that is fairy discreet, like a pencilcase. This way they will be prepared if their period starts at school and if they have their period already, they will have spares in case they need them during the day. Any supermarket or chemist should sell pads or tampons. If you happen to see a case such as the one being shown fall out of a girl’s bag, or being carried, please be respectful as you know what she will be dealing with. Your mothers, grandmothers, aunts, older sisters, women teachers have all dealt with this as well.

USE U BY KOTEX KIT:

ALL: Pads are easy to use, they fold out and have a sticky strip on the back to attach them to underpants and then some have wings on the sides to wrap around the edge of the underpants to hold them in place. Others don’t have the wings, it is each person’s individual choice which ones they would like to use. Pads come in different sizes from very small and light to super big and thick. A regular thickness would be a good option for the first few periods until someone gets used to them and knows what they need. People might like to try applying a pad and wearing one before their first period arrives so that they have a chance to get used to how it feels.

Tampons are a little different to pads as they actually get inserted into the vagina. These also come in different sizes so trying a small size first would be a good choice. They can be difficult to insert in the right place so people may need to practice this a little. If anything in uncomfortable, take it out and try again as tampons shouldn’t hurt. These are an option if choosing to swim while having a period - once inserted, a string is left outside of the body so that they can be removed when needed.

With both pads and tampons, they should be changed every 3 – 4 hours so as to stop bacteria causing an odour. They may need changing more frequently depending on the menstrual flow – everyone is different! Never leave a tampon in overnight or for more than 8 hours. You can wear a pad overnight instead.

Erections and Ejaculation

During puberty, erections can occur spontaneously, or because of sexy thoughts and feelings.

An erection is when the penis goes hard and stiff due to a sudden rush of blood to the area.

When an erection occurs at night while a boy is asleep, he might ejaculate. This is called a nocturnal emission.

Ejaculate is semen (and sperm) being released from the penis. This can only happen when the penis is erect.

Managing embarrassing events - Boys

Spontaneous erections and nocturnal emissions are normal and healthy for boys to experience during puberty.

Boys can plan ahead to minimise any embarrassment
e.g. loose clothing, extra PJs and sets of sheets,
helping with the washing
