“How would you describe the online delivery of the course?”

  • Great! As a first experience with this type of course, it certainly fits a need for distance learning.
  • I thought the course was interactive and gave us a chance to work with others.
  • I loved that it was online, but we were still engaged the entire class with activities, role playing, and break out rooms.
  • I LOVE the digital learning environment and feel that I can truly work with others in a way that is meaningful and personal.
  • She did a lot of break out rooms, which ensured deeper discussion, bc it allowed us to share our ideas with others first before discussing as a class
  • totally collaborative and engaging
  • I enjoyed it. This was my first time taking an online course and it was easy to navigate and easy to participate. I didn't think I would be this involved in an online class and I am grateful for it.
  • I enjoy learning in an online environment and still find that my peers and I are able to connect on a personal level because there is a strong sense of community within our cohort.
  • The online delivery of this course was great! I am enjoying being part of this online cohort
  • So engaging! I appreciate the group work we did in class. Our discussions and activities are so helpful.
  • Really well done compared to other online courses I have taken.
  • It rivals any classroom setting.

Stairway to Chichen Itza

Jordan is designing a diorama of Chichen Itza, a Mayan pyramid. Chichen Itza has staircases on all four faces of the square pyramid. Jordan is using wooden cubes to create the staircase. They noticed a pattern, and was able to calculate the number of cubes needed for 20 steps. They explained the pattern to their partner Julio, but Julio saw a different pattern.

  1. Describe two different ways that the students could visualize the pattern.
  2. Use both visualizations to calculate the cubes needed for 20 steps.
  3. How many steps do you think are actually along one side of Chichen Itza? How many cubes would Jordan need to create a perfect replica of Chichen Itza?

Virtual Parking Lot ask your questions, answer questions, give advise and add new slides for more room.

  • As a music teacher, I am not sure of the most equitable way to reach all students, including those with limited or no access to the internet at home... or, if there even is a way.
    • Equity is something that I hope schools are considering and developing a plan. I have heard of some schools assigning laptops and a my-fi (mobile wi-fi) card to students. This seems expensive and potentially delayed. Regardless, some students will have more access than others, and that will be our challenge. I can offer you some advice in terms of access with low-speed internet. If you limit streaming video by giving a youtube link instead of imbedding the link in your slides, it will allow students to download the video ahead of time. Also, many teleconferencing apps allow you to show your video. This is not always needed, and should be turned off to lower bandwidth issues.
  • What is best way/platform to do a read aloud? Is there a way to have students call in, listen, and then have a conversation? (trying to think of younger students who can't type/write)
    • Blackboard Collaborate allows you to screen share, and allows the student to as well (if in presenter mode). If the text is digital, you can both see it and you can use a pointer, highlighter, or marker tool to draw attention to a tricky word. Audio in collaborate is pretty good.

  • How do I support Ss from my intervention groups while at home with limited support and support teachers while they're making this shift?
    • When I work with intervention groups in a F2F environment, I like to do simple routines with rigorous expectations. For example, an math talk on which one doesn’t belong. You could even record your sessions and that become PD for the teachers that you are working with. If you can identify the routine, then we can brainstorm how to turn it online. (Feel free to ask, I love doing that).
  • How do I get ready made lessons?
    • I’m currently developing a dropbox for lessons. I have many that I will share, but they are math related. I think that the overall pedagogical nature can be replicated in any class. Let me know what you would like.

    • Flipgrid
    • Create a youtube morning meeting each morning and then have them respond via video
    • Students can create a video book review. This might take some help from caregivers to upload it and/or make a youtube channel that the teacher can subscribe to. Be sure to check with your school about FERPA and student identity in a public space before moving forward.
