This is Vincent Van Gogh. He lived in The Netherlands, in Northern Europe from 1853-1890. In only 10 years he created over 2,000 paintings!
Vincent Van Gogh
Van Gogh spent his early life as an art dealer, and a missionary. Then he moved to Paris, the capital of France and met his lifelong friend and fellow artist Paul Gauguin. Gauguin introduced him to other artists and soon Van Gogh was painting too.He mostly painted still lifes and scenes of the peasants in France.
Then he left the city and moved out to the country around Arles. Van Gogh’s paintings in Arles, France are very brightly colored, focused on flowers and landscapes, or scenes of the outdoors- things that made him happy.
Starry Night
One of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings is called “Starry Night”. He painted this picture to look like the light of the moon and stars were coming alive in the night sky.
There is a lot of MOVEMENT in this picture. The sky has a lot of texture- almost like you can feel it with your hands!
Brush Strokes
Van Gogh loved to pile on his paint. Sometimes he wouldn’t even use a brush! He would use a tool called a palette knife to glob on big chunks of paint.
This made his pictures very dimensional.
Today we will be using oil pastels to create flowers just like Van Gogh. Our flowers will be in every color of the rainbow. We will create COLOR WHEEL flowers.
