Identifying risk with science + communities

We developed a web application, that combines NASA’s satellite data and ground-based data from local authorities in a landslide susceptibility map.

Main objectives and achievements

What we wanted to achieve:

  • To create a suitable environment for data exchange and collaboration between NASA and local institutions
  • To improve access to data and risk assessment for the general public
  • To improve disaster readiness, regardless of community resources
  • To reach globally

What we achieved:

  • Incorporated EOSDID data in our model
  • Provided a quick and straight-forward way for inputting ground-based data locally to improve the accuracy of the analysis
  • Deployed a model, that quickly identifies high-risk areas in order to allow for a preemptive response to landslide hazard
  • Provided a model, that can work even without local input
  • Ensured global coverage, thanks to low cost and global data from NASA
  • Created a way for local authorities without a proper landslide inventory to monitor the region

WHAT MAKES OUR PROJECT STAND OUT

  • We used Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for susceptibility determination to allow a risk assessment in areas with insufficient data
  • GeoSpace can be used globally thanks to NASA’s extensive earth observation data
