INTRODUCTION TO THE TEAM
Hi this is team Shukra and we worked on the- Radioisotope power system condensed under split ring mechanism.
Firstly I would like to explain the meaning of our team’s name. Shukra is a Sanskrit word that means "clear" or "bright".In medieval mythology and Hindu astrology, the term refers to the planet Venus, one of the Navagrahas(Nine planets).
Our team members did a great job in completing this wonderful project.
Prakash Navdeep and Rehaan Khan provided with a list of parameters that are necessary for operating the energy system and all the resources needed for this challenge. Prakash drafted the final hypothesis of the same.
Hansica Dutt and Uplabdhi Shukla looked into the external factors like the atmospheric conditions of Venus along with the concentration of elements and the whole meteorological conditions of Venus.
Siddhartha and Harsha Vardhan looked into the power source and selected the energy system for the rover.
Project details
We are using a Radioisotope Power System in the rover. Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) are lightweight, compact spacecraft power systems that are extraordinarily reliable. A customized General Purpose Heat Source Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (GPHS-RTG) is chosen as the RPS for this case. RPS have been used in many earlier missions, are capable of operating for long duration missions, on the order of years, and have no moving parts.
For cooling the system we are using Split Ring Mechanism
It will again power the entire system, this process will be able to conserve Macro energy.
Split Ring Mechanism
We are using Split ring to cool the power system and conserve the macro energy.
An array of split-ring resonators efficiently absorbs and re-emits thermal energy as IR radiation to power thermophotovoltaic systems. This way the heating can be reduced once the IR is emitted.
How does this help the project
The mechanism starts with continuous decay of the radioactive nuclei of plutonium-238 (Pu-238) from which constant heat is generated, this heat is used by thermoelectric generators for the production of energy to the lander system. As it has no moving parts the system is reliable to use. The entire system is preserved in a chamber of stainless steel alloy, which protects it from the external factors. The work done by radiated heat constantly increases on the system, instead of disposing the heat into the surroundings most of the portion is converted into IR radiation using the Split-Ring resonator, that utilizes this heat energy to power the system. This avoids the placement of a liquid cooling system thus reducing the number of moving parts and work done by the system. This mechanism couldn't increase the efficiency of the thermoelectric generator but on a complete scale it will be making use of the dissipated energy.
This will help the project by increasing the efficiency of the rover to survive 60 Earth days on Venus in the extreme atmospheric conditions and will help to gather a lot of data.
