What is the divisibility rule for 2
Rule: The divisibility rule for 2 is if the number can be divisible by 2 or the last number is an even number.
Example that WORKS: 12 works because the last number is 2 and 2 is an even number. Also 12 can be divided by 2.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 25 doesn’t work because the last number is a 3 and 3 is an odd number. Also 25 cannot be divided by 2.
What is the divisibility rule for 3
Rule: The rules for 3 is that if you add the digits from the number, the sum has to be able to be divided by 3.
Example that WORKS: 585 works because 5+8+5=18 and 18 can be divided by 3.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 124 doesn’t work because 1+2+4=7 and 7 can’t be divided by 3.
What is the divisibility rule for 4
Rule: The rule for 4 is that the last 2 digits from the number has to be divisible by 4.
Example that WORKS: 5936 works because the last 2 digits which is 36 is divisible by 4.
Example that DOESN’T WORKS: 526 doesn’t work because the last 2 digits which is 26 and 26 is not divisible by 4.
What is the divisibility rule for 5
Rule: The rule for 5 is that the number has to end with 5 or 0.
Example that WORKS: 750 works because it ends with a zero.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 124 doesn’t work because it ends with a 4.
What is the divisibility rule for 6
Rule: The rule for 6 is that the number has to be divisible by 2 and 3.
Example that WORKS: 594 works because if you add the digits up, it will be divisible by 3 and the number ends with an even number.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 836 doesn’t work, even though it ends with an even number, the sum of the number is not divisible by 3.
What is the divisibility rule for 7
Rule: The rule for 7 is that you have to double the last digit from the number and then subtract it from the remaining numbers. The number that you have after you subtract and double has to be divisible by 7.
Example that WORKS: 672 is divisible by 7 because if you double 2, it becomes 4 and 67-4=63. 63 is divisible by 7.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 905 doesn’t work because double 5 is 10 and 90-10=80. 80 is not in the 7 times table.
What is the divisibility rule for 8
Rule: The rule for 8 is that the last 3 digits from the number has to be divisible by 8.
Example that WORKS: 109816 works because the last 3 digits which are 816, are divisible by 8 equals 102.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 728302 doesn’t work because the last 3 digits are 302 and 302 divided by 8 = 75.5
What is the divisibility rule for 9
Rule: The rule for 9 is that the sum of the digit has to be able to be divided by 9.
Example that WORKS: 1629 is divisible because 1+6+2+9 =18 and 1+8=9.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 2017 doesn’t work because 2+0+1+7=10 and 10 isn’t in the 9 times table.
What is the divisibility rule for 10
Rule: The rule for 10 is that the number has to end with a 0.
Example that WORKS: 1740 works because the last digit ends with a zero.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 421 doesn’t work because the last digit ends with 1.
EXTENSION: What is the divisibility rule for 11
Rule: The rule for 11 is that you have to add the first digit then subtract then add and it goes on until you get to the last digit. The answer has to be divisible by 11.
Example that WORKS: 913 works because +9-1+3=11 and 11 is definitely divisible by 11.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 987 doesn’t work because +9-8+7=8 and 8 cannot be divided by 11.
EXTENSION: What is the divisibility rule for 12
Rule: The rule for 12 is that it has to be divisible by 3 and 4.
Example that WORKS: 648 works because 6+4+8=18 and 18 is divisible by 3. Also 48 divided by 4 is 12.
Example that DOESN’T WORK: 424 doesn’t work, even though 24 is divisible by 4, 4+2+4=10 and 10 doesn’t belong in the 3 times table.
