  • International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples takes place annually on 9th August.
  • It is an opportunity to raise awareness about, and protect the rights of, Indigenous Peoples around the world.
  • The theme for 2025 #Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures is about Indigenous Peoples being involved in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies as co-creators, decision-makers, and data rights-holders, so that ‘AI does not reproduce historical patterns of exclusion, marginalization, and appropriation’ (UN).

Facts About Indigenous Peoples

  • Indigenous Peoples live across all regions of the world in 90 countries.
  • They make up 6 percent of the world's population (476 million).
  • They speak a majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.
  • Indigenous Peoples suffer disproportionately from climate change, environmental degradation, high levels of poverty, poor access to education, health, and broader human rights violations.
  • Indigenous Peoples are nearly three times as likely to be living in extreme poverty. They account for almost 19 percent of the extreme poor.
  • Around 200 groups of Indigenous Peoples currently live in voluntary isolation, preserving their cultures and ways of life. They are at particular risk from disease and the destruction of ecosystems they rely on.
