the talk: Analyze the impact of the talk on the audience.

  • Title of Ted Talk? What could have been a better title?
  • The speaker wants the audience to believe, understand, or do what?
  • The main idea the speaker conveys to the audience is that--
  • An anecdote is a brief personal story used to make a point. Summarize an anecdote the speaker used in the Ted Talk. What point was the speaker trying to make by using this anecdote?
  • If the audience acts on the speaker’s message and decides to apply it to their lives, it would mean what?
  • Which part of the speaker’s message do you agree with? Which part of the speaker’s message do you not understand or not agree with?

the speaker: Analyze the speaker’s delivery skills.

  • How much walking or how much space on the stage is the speaker using?
  • Describe where the speaker is looking all throughout the Ted Talk. Are they looking at one spot? All around? More to the left or right side of the room? What do you notice?
  • What does the speaker do with their hands and arms during the Ted Talk? Did you notice any repetitive movements? Did the speaker use their hand or arms to emphasize a particular point?
  • Fidgeting: How much or how little did the speaker touch their hair, face, jewelry, clothing, etc.?
  • What about the speaker’s voice? Was it clear or muffled? Did they use inflection (making voice louder or softer) to make certain points stronger?
  • Think about the pacing of the speaker’s voice. Was it too fast, too slow, or just right? Did the speaker speed up or slow down on purpose to emphasize a key idea?
