The goals of the STEAM SMO Club:

  • identifying of the target audience
  • presentation of the program with participation of interested students
  • empower students in getting involved in school activities that are adapted to the modern way of teaching and that stimulate their interest for school topics, as they will be connected with the realities they meet outside the school.
  • equip the SmartLab laboratory with the necessary digital equipment, offering teachers and students opportunities to participate in training and development programs in order to develop their digital skills and create cross-curricular activities with the use of technology (Thanks to the LfE funding, we equipped our SmartLab with laptops for our students, an interactive board with educational software and a 3D printer.)

In-school demonstrator - linking disciplines

  • Interdisciplinarity – creating connections with other subject areas:
  • Geography – tectonic movements, earth layers
  • Biology – earthquake precursors related to animal behaviour
  • History – collection of papers / documents/ statistics/ journals/ interviews with elderly people regarding earthquakes
  • Music - harmonizing earthquakes
  • Art – drawing posters about the effects
  • Computer Science – creating programs in order to transform earthquake into sound
  • Physics – interference of seismic waves – Lloyd’s mirror

Art – drawing posters about the effects; painting/drawing 3D printed models

Activity where children place themself in line, in the correct order of intensities, after identifying the important elements represented in the drawings.

Use 3D printer to make educationals materials and the skill of the students to draw/paint it.

Partnership opportunities

Sîntămăria-Orlea Secondary School is in an area with seismic activity. As there is no official curriculum on this type of education, students are encouraged to explore the context of earthquakes from a historic and cultural perspective, understand the impact it has on the community and how to become responsible citizen, which in we try to connect our school with various partners:

  • Educational networks such as EduGeoparc Network,
  • UNESCO International Geopark Țara Hațegului,
  • EduGeoparc Science School, RoEduSeis network,
  • The National Institute of Research and Development for Earth Physics.

Examples of activities that STEAM SMO will do in future

  • Build a seismometer: SIEISMOLab Demonstrators: How to build a seismometer
  • Establishing a communication channel between schools/institutions that have installed seismometers. With the help of this communication channel, students will be able to calculate the epicenter of an earthquake, using digital resources.
  • Open day for the STEAM SMO
  • Activities carried out during the "Night of European Researchers" event
