The Trial and Error of Starting Seedlings
Lessons of a failed gardener
What we are going to cover
Some Common Themes
Lesson #1 of Failed GardenerSoil Quality determines quality of harvest
# 1 Rookie Mistake we all do
OVERPLANTING
When to Sow
Winter Sow
Early Spring
What you want to plant and when you want to harvest tells you when to Sow.
You need to break out the types of plants based on cold hardiness and time to maturity. Some plants NEED to go through a frost to fully mature
Summer
Late Summer
Winter Sowing Indoors
Starting certain seedlings indoors helps you get longer producing plants
Easiest way is in a south facing window
Use anything that holds soil: plastic pots, seed trays, cut off soda bottles, milk jugs, Half & Half cardboard , egg shells, coconut halves
Poke holes in bottom, fill with seedling soil that retains water, cover with plastic wrap to keep moisture in – Put in Aluminum tray
Use heat pad if you can to control temperatures especially at night – will speed up growth of seedling but be aware it will evaporate quicker
Winter Sowing Indoors
Grow Light Tips
What to Sow Indoors
Slow Growing or early vegetables Start end of February
Green Peppers
Hot Peppers
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Kale/lettuce
Onion/Leek Seeds in Mid - January 10-12 weeks ahead of frost
Start Summer VegetablesMid-March – 6/8 weeks before last frost
Tomatoes
Zucchini
Eggplant
Cucumbers
Squash
Okra
Cabbage
Winter Sowing Outdoors
CERTAIN VEGGIES AND FLOWERS NEED THE COLD TO BREAK THE HULL AND ALLOW GERMINATION
VERY EASY TO DO – BUT DON’T FORGET THEM!
THEY NEED TO HAVE WATER
Flowers and Plants that require Cold Sowing
Perennials
Vegetables that like Cold
Lesson #2 of Failed GardenerYou can put the seeds in ziplocks/dirt in the fridge for 2-3 weeks to simulate cold stratification before planting seed
COLD-WET StratificationColumbine
Paw-Paw
Milk Weed
These vegetables like colder weather
Cold Frames
Get a jump start and protect from the Frost
Can start direct sowing Mid- March
Will need to water your bed regularly
Can start any cold stratified vegetable this way
Can simply Bend PVC pipe over your bed and cover with Plastic and bricks to hold it down
Early Spring Planting
MID-LATE MARCH
COLD HARDY/FROST RESISTANT PLANTS
NO COLD FRAME OR COVER NECESSARY
PEAS
BROCCOLI SEEDLINGS
CAULIFLOWER SEEDLINGS
KALE SEEDLINGS
SWISS CHARD SEEDLINGS
ONION/LEEK SEEDLINGS
CARROT SEEDS
POTATOES
RADISH
BEETS
Summer Sowing
Lesson #3 of Failed GardenerYou can plant 2 seasons of some veggies
Late Summer - Fall Harvest
2nd season VegetablesMid August
Green Beans
Broccoli/Cauliflower Seedlings
Brussel Sprouts
Beets
Radish
Spinach
Lettuce
Garlic/Onion setsMid to Late October
You don’t want them to grow much
Setting them up to overwinter
These harvest in July the next year
Lesson #4 of Failed GardenerSaying “Hello” to Late Summer Harvest means Saying “Good-Bye” to some of your tomatoes and other vegetables as they compete for space
