Walt use a number of different strategies to solve multiplication problems

We know that 5x7 = 35. But how do we show this?

We can show this using:

  • Times tables (as above)
  • Doubling and halving e.g. if we know that 10x7 = 70, and we know that 5 is half of 10, what is half of 70? This will be our answer!

Problem:

5x9 = ?

Solve this problem using doubling and halving.

Walt use a number of different strategies to solve multiplication problems

Sharie went to the beach. She found 8 different types of shells. She found 4 of each type of shell. She organised them into their groups. How many shells did she collect altogether?

Remember:

  • Even if you know the answer, show how you could solve this by using doubling/halving.
  • Our goal is to learn our times tables so we are quick at answering questions like this!
