Claim Evidence Reasoning

Claim Evidence Reasoning is a framework for constructing scientific explanations.

Write down these definitions.

Claim: conclusion statement thatanswers question

Evidence: DATA that support the claim (tables, charts, graphs, observations)

Reasoning: explanation of the science behind why the facts support the claim

HOW TO WRITE A SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION (CER)

C= Claim. The fortune fish is not alive.

E= It does not —---.

R= Reasoning. The fortune fish – - - - but living fish – - - -. So the fortune fish is not alive.

HOW TO WRITE A SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION (CER)

C= Claim. Statement that responds to the question.

E= Evidence. Data that support your claim.

R= Reasoning. Explain why your evidence (data) supports your claim. In other words, how does your data prove your point?

R: The boy was punched in the face at prom. When you get hit hard in the face, it bruises (called a black eye). When you kiss someone else’s girlfriend, they get mad. When someone is mad enough, they may approach you angrily. The boy kissed the prom king’s girlfriend and the prom king got really mad. The boy had a black eye on the way home. Therefore, the boy was punched in the face at the prom.

PROBLEM: Is the sham wow worth buying?

CLAIM What does Vince want you to do? EVIDENCE

Why is Vince so convincing?

Write down all the evidence that Vince uses to convince you to buy Sham Wow.

Claim –

A conclusion statementthat answers question

My hypothesis was proven correct (or incorrect).

The Sham Wow is more effective at absorbing water than a paper towel.

Experimental evidence

Facts that led you to make the claimDATAwhatever you measured or observed!!!

What evidence does Vince use to convince you to buy Sham Wow? -holds 20x its weight in liquid demonstrations - dried off the counter -washable-better for the environment-save $20 a month on paper towels-change the size -different/multiple uses-10 year warranty-Made In Germany -Germans make good things

Claim: You should buy a Sham Wow.

Evidence:

REASONINGWhat more could Vince do to convince you that you should buy Sham Wow?(hint: think like a science teacher)

Let’s make Vince’s presentation even better and add the reasoning to his evidence.

29 of 37

Reasoning

Uses logic to tie evidence to the claim.

Detailed explanation for why the evidence led you to make the claim.

Deep explanation of the science concepts the science concepts

Why do the facts support the statement.

Why did my experiment turn out the way it did.

The scientific background knowledge that justifies why a multiple choice answer is the best answer.

30 of 37

Reasoning:

The Sham Wow works so well because it contains micro fibers. Micro fiber towels are made from two synthetic (man made) materials, usually nylon and polyester. They are smaller than 1/100th the diameter of a human hair. This gives the towel a lot of surface area to make contact with the spill and absorb the liquid.

Look for the claim, the evidence, the reasoning

(Hint – ideas will not be presented in that order.)

What is the claim the reporter is making?

What evidence does she cite in the report that supports that claim?

What is the scientific explanation?

Physiological reason smiling makes you happy

WHY DO WE USE CLAIM, EVIDENCE, REASONING?Use it to discuss claims made in documentaries, videos, commercials.

Use it after an experiment to explain why a hypothesis was proven correct or not.

Use it to justify why an OAA question is correct.

Use it to engage in structured, respectful, argumentation.
