It’s getting closer

Five days to go before your placements begin.

Our next task is make sure all elements are in place before you attend you placement..

Next steps- complete if needed

  1. Ensure you know where your placement is and how long it will take you to get there.

  • Purchase any clothing that is required if you do not have it. You will have most of what is required e.g. smart casual means a shirt and shoes.

  • Tutors will complete the Work Experience Agreement spreadsheet when you return your form.

Agreement return

  • You will not be able to attend your work experience if this is not returned.

  • Any pupil not taking part in work experience will spend the week in their college IER.

Your Work Experience Log Book-

Your tutor will take you through this.

  1. You must have this with you every day. Keep this safe and make sure you have your emergency contact details included. We do not have spare booklets.
  2. Please go through your booklet with your tutor.
  3. Complete page 3 of your log book neatly- Your details/School details/Placement details. You must include your emergency contact.
  4. Ask your parents/carers to read and sign page 4.
  5. You also sign page 4.
  6. Look at and complete the Before your placement tasks on page 5- tick each task that is completed.
  7. Make sure you have completed your telephone call if required to do so - page 6.
  8. Complete your pre placement assessment - page 7.
  9. Add your personal targets- page 9.
  10. Complete page 9 with your tutor preparing you for things you may be uncertain about
  11. Complete the rest of the booklet whilst on work placement.
  12. Return your completed booklet at the end of work experience.

Excellence on Work Experience Award

Your tutor will take you through this.

We would like as many of you as possible to achieve the work experience excellence award.

  • Tasks are set out in the booklet.

  • Please complete all the tasks neatly and in full.

  • Return the completed excellence booklet with your log book following work experience.

Final Checklist-

  1. You have returned your work experience agreement
  2. You know the location of your placement
  3. You know your travel arrangements to and from
  4. You know your day timings
  5. You know your lunch arrangements
  6. You know what to wear
  7. You know your supervisor/contacts name
  8. You have your log book with you everyday
  9. You have completed your pre placement activities in your logbook
  10. You have completed your emergency contact details in your logbook
  11. You have completed your interview details if you have them on your agreement

First impressions-

  • Be on time- think of on time as ten minutes early
  • Follow the correct dress code- if in doubt contact your employer to check and be sure
  • Be polite- Introduce yourself. Thank your contact for taking you on.
  • Listen to instructions and interact with your employer
  • Complete any tasks that you are given but make sure you ASK if you are unsure about the task.
  • Be back from break and lunch on time
  • Work through until the end of your day, it may be longer than a school day
  • Thank your employer at the end of the day
  • Be on time day 2 and start again. Remember to complete your log book.

Contact details

  • Store your supervisor's name and number in your phone (If you have any issues with travel and going to be late or are unwell, you will look professional by giving your supervisor the heads up).

BUT do not bombard your supervisor with texts and calls that are not of an urgent nature.

  • Please call the school to inform them if you are unwell and will not be attending your placement.

Health & Safety

  • Follow the training you have received when using any work items your employer has given you.

  • Take reasonable care of your own and other people’s health and safety.

  • Cooperate with your employer on health and safety.

  • Tell someone (your employer, supervisor, or health and safety representative) if you think the work or inadequate precautions are putting anyone’s health and safety at serious risk.

  • If you are worried about health and safety in your workplace, talk to your employer, supervisor, or health and safety representative.

  • Wear any protective equipment provided

to you at all times.

The Do’s

  • Make a good first impression.
  • Get to know people.
  • Be organised.
  • Get involved.
  • Ask questions.
  • Make suggestions.
  • Offer to help.
  • Make notes.
  • Ask for feedback.
  • If you don’t understand what is being asked of you – ASK as your employer would rather you asked than not understand or be unhappy.

  • If you are worried about something or the placement isn’t what you thought– Speak to someone (employer/parents/carers/school teachers).

  • Do not use your phone during the working day (employers may have rules against the use of phones, and some will find it rude if you are constantly staring at a phone screen).
  • Be polite and respectful at all times

After your placement

  • Say thank you to the employer at the end of your placement. Write them a card or letter. It is very important that you do this.

Thank you for allowing me to spend a week at [company name] in [month of placement].

I enjoyed working in [name of department/office/location] with [names of people you worked with] I found it really useful to be in a real workplace; the most important thing I learnt was [insert what you think was your most important lesson]. This will help me prepare for the world of work by [insert your reasons for this being an important lesson] The placement also helped me to realise that I have good skills in [name your strongest skills] and that I can do more to develop my skills in [name the skills you’re going to improve].

Thank you for taking the time to organise my placement and [add anything else you particularly want to thank them for, e.g. taking you out for lunch/showing you around on your first day].
