Q8. Level of curriculum meets or exceeds my expectations:

Math

73%

Comments = 37

Recommendations

Math results on the student survey were lower for elementary than middle school (55% vs. 67%).

Zearn as a Common Core and not Core Knowledge curriculum was mentioned in more than one response.

Parents are technically correct in that Zearn is Common Core.

  • GB ask the principal to follow up with elementary teachers to determine which content of Zearn properly overlaps with Core Knowledge, and to devise a plan for addressing any topics from Core Knowledge not sufficiently covered in Zearn.

Teachers seem unprepared and inconsistent.

  • Conduct more routine Zearn training.

Zearn is not challenging or rigorous.

19 of 37 comments referenced issues with Zearn ranging from “heartbreaking” to “appalling.”

  • Consider changes to the curriculum review cycle schedule.
  • Review math curriculum committee recommendations made to the GB last year.

Spanish

Comments = 37

Recommendations

General agreement that parents are not happy with the curriculum and the direction since previous teachers left Littleton Academy.

Parents describe Spanish and the teachers as “ineffective, unorganized, disjointed, and random.”

  • Return to vocabulary in elementary and move to grammar in middle school as immersion does not work at Littleton Academy.

This subject is not teacher-led. There are no textbooks.

  • Return to traditional teacher-led classes that align with Littleton Academy founding principles.

8th graders transitioning to high school are no longer being placed in Spanish 3 or 4 but Spanish 2 instead. This decline has occurred in the last three years.

  • Prove Littleton Academy is teaching pre-high school with fidelity.

Senor Wooly videos are not working.

  • Return to textbook-driven scope and sequence curriculum.

  • Keep what they are doing as it is working such as reinforcing positive behaviors and fostering peer interactions. Very pleased with upward trend: 55% to 63% to 70%.

Be careful to ensure that children with wide age differences are not on the playground at the same time.

The dress code is outdated, sexist, and not inclusive to multiple cultures.

  • Revise dress code policy to make it gender neutral by referring to “students” instead of “boys” or “girls” and allow for cultural practices.

Recommendations/Comments

Many comments about the firing of two principals in two years and the resulting lack of stability.

  • These number and veracity of the comments reflect the timing of the survey and the confounding of the previous GB with one.

The Governing Board is improved and doing well.

  • There is always room for improvement but there’s a sense that this GB is doing well overall.
  • Continue with a post GB update to inform the community as meeting minutes are published much later.

Problems with communication

  • Clearly communicate problem resolution to reinforce and publicize the proper channels to report a problem. Details should be included in the handbook for both the school and staff.

PARENT FOLLOW-UP SURVEY RECOMMENDATION

LAAC recommends that a school-wide document be created for both parents and the public that explains what is taught at each grade level.

      • Define what parents should expect that their child(ren) will learn each year.
      • Have a monthly teacher newsletter/update recapping what students learned, what they are learning and what they will learn.
