WHAT IS A MAGNET?

A magnet is an object that exerts an invisible magnetic force and can attract (pull towards) and repel (push towards) other magnets. Today, we will learn about attraction and repulsion of the magnets.

  • Firstly, magnets have 2 poles: North Pole (N) and South Pole (S)
  • Like poles repel each other (push away from each other)
  • North repels North and
  • South repels South

It’s time to witness how magnets repel and attract each other ourselves!

Arrange yourselves in groups of 6-7

Each group should have:

  1. 4 donut magnets
  2. 3 bar magnets
  3. 6 wooden skewers
  4. Some bluetack
  5. String

6. A pencil/pen/marker

7. Tape

8. 2 plastic cups

9. Paper clips/Staples

10. Origami Paper

Floating Ring Trick!

Stack 3 donut magnets on a pen/pencil/marker!�

Question: What do you think will happen if we flip the magnet in the middle?

I believe I can fly!

  1. Use the origami paper to draw an animal/object! Use your imagination!
  2. Tape it to a paper clip, tape the paper clip to a string & tape the string to the table
  3. Use your magic wand to make your creatures fly!

  • Now, place a piece of paper over 2 cups, with your creations below the paper
  • Place a magnet on the paper: Will it still attract the clips?
