State Assembly Prep - Materials

  • Study up a bit on the United States and Ohio constitutions

  • Review possible list of bills that could be brought to trial - depends on readiness of Chief Justice and Attorney General
    • This list will hopefully be released in the GroupMe by the Monday before conference

Court Process

  • Pretrial (15 min)
    • While a case is happening, Attorneys for the next case can meet with authors to discuss their arguments
  • Opening Arguments (2 min/side)
    • Attorney General and Attorney for Authors present their arguments and evidence (case law, constitutional articles, etc.)
  • Justice Questions (4 min)
    • The attorneys and Attorney General answer questions from justices regarding their argument
  • Rebuttal (2 min/side)
    • Attorney General and Attorney for Authors challenge each others’ arguments
  • Justice Questions (4 min)
    • The attorneys and Attorney General answer questions from justices regarding their argument
  • Discussion (3 min)
    • Justices discuss and vote on the bill. Amendments are proposed.
  • Decision (3-5 min)
    • Constitutional or unconstitutional. Authors may accept amendment to bill
    • Does not prevent bill from passing or being signed by the Youth Governor

Tips & Tricks

  • Bring a notebook, laptop, or anything to write on. You’ll want something to take notes on arguments and case law. It might help your own case or it could change how you vote on bills.
  • If possible, bring something with internet access (phone, laptop, etc.) to access court cases, constitutional sites, and other resources
