What is Open Learning WV?

  • Statewide initiative dedicated to making higher education more affordable, accessible, and engaging 
  • Supports the creation and use of no-cost and low-cost course materials including high-quality Open Educational Resources(OER)
  • 2019 - HB 2853 passed
    • (a)(1)  to encourage and facilitate the use of open education resource materials in both higher education and kindergarten through 12th grade in West Virginia schools.
  • 2023 “Wherever and to the extent practicable, the university shall offer open educational resources for dual enrollment courses.”

Open Learning WV Activities

  • Grants to adopt, modify, create OER – since 2021
    • General Grants, $1,000
    • Dual Enrollment Grants, $1,000
    • Bridge OER Grants, $2,500
      • Areas of study include Engineering, Communications & Media, Computer Science, and Criminal Justice.
  • Yearly Convening
    • 2 days, keynotes, concurrent sessions = 111 participants this year
