WHAT IS THE ANNUAL SUBCOMMITTEE MEETING?

The Annual Subcommittee meeting of the UNEP is the yearly five-day gathering of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to review program performance, budget implementation, and strategies, or to discuss draft resolutions ahead of the next Environment Assembly.

Core Objectives

    • Review Program Performance: Evaluate the current Programme Performance Report to ensure UNEP projects are achieving their environmental targets.
    • Budget and Funding Oversight: Review the funding base of the organization and manage the administration of available resources.
    • Strategic Planning: Design or update the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) and the upcoming multi-year Programme of Work.
    • Regional Coordination: Integrate feedback and contributions from regional forums of environmental ministers into global strategies.
    • Prepare for the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA): Draft decisions, review pending resolutions, and organize the agenda for the upcoming global UNEA.
    • Stakeholder Engagement: Provide an official avenue for accredited civil society organizations and Major Groups to influence policy-making.
