Plea for Unity and Humility (Phil 2:1 – 11)

The admonition to likemindedness and unity is based on the believers’ threefold experience with Christ, God’s love, and the Spirit.

Unity

Philippians 2:2

“complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing.”

  • The elder has to work on our unity of vision and mission in MFC.
  • Our relationship with one another is that of real brethren.
  • We are to be loyal to each other.

Humility

Philippians 2:3

“Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves,”

  • There should be no rivalry.
  • We need to realize that the signs and wonders we experience is not our own doing, but God’s.

Servanthood

Philippians 2:4

“each looking out not for his own interests, but [also] everyone for those of others.”

  • We have been bought at the cost of Jesus’ blood.
  • We are to take the place of a slave.
  • When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’” (Lk. 17:10)

Being Christ-like

Philippians 2:5

“Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus,”

  • Jesus is our only model.
  • Our life and service all point to Jesus.

Not after position or power

Philippians 2:6

“Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.”

  • No turfs or factions.
  • Stand ready to step aside in favor of another.
  • Do not protect your couples from your elder.
  • Jesus has shown the way. He was (is) God, but he did not grasp at this.

Self-Denial

Philippians 2:7

“Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance,”

  • All of us are called to discipleship.
  • There should be no room for self-concern or self-interest.
  • We should be able to endure difficulty, even deprivation.
  • We need to empty ourselves, so God can fill us up.

Self-sacrifice

Philippians 2:8

“he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.”

  • We need to give our all, until it truly hurts.
  • Unlike the early Christians, we are too comfortable.

Just like Jesus, God will lift us up.

“Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,” (Philippians 2:9)

Our task and call in MFC is rapid, massive and global evangelization.

“that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,,” (Philippians 2:10)

We want every tongue to proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord!

“and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.,” (Philippians 2:11)
