A person’s identity has many layers. Today, we are going to differentiate between two different layers of identity.

The first layer, is known as our PERSONAL Identity. This includes things like our personality traits, hobbies, interests, our values, etc.

Often, we see and hear interactions between people that are based on assumptions and biases. These assumptions and biases are prejudiced attitudes that are based on an acceptance of stereotypes as truth, laughing off racist jokes, or blaming people because of their group identity.

When we hold beliefs that are based on biases and assumptions, and assume them to be true, our actions will also be prejudiced. Some examples of prejudiced actions are name calling, ridiculing, social avoidance, exclusion and telling dehumanizing jokes.

When a person holds prejudiced attitudes, these thoughts and beliefs will shape their actions and turn into acts of prejudice that impacts others. Even if someone is “Just joking” or “didn’t mean it” or “didn’t know”, the comment or action still is racist. As we saw in the video, someone can be a really nice person, but was taught prejudiced ideas. These ideas need to be unlearned in order for us to live in a world that is free of racism. We all have a chance to unlearn racist ideas we have been taught, and to help our classmates, our families, and others to unlearn as well.

Just now we talked about Prejudiced attitudes, that when uninterrupted, leads to prejudice actions. These two levels are the bottom levels of what we call a “pyramid of hate”. When individual racism that shows up as prejudiced attitudes and actions are not interrupted, they start to seep into systems - just like the video talked about.

When entire systems - like media, or education, or the justrices system disadvantage and entire group of people, this is called systemic racism, or discrimination based on race.

Systemic racism is built on foundations of prejudice, because when biases and assumptions go unchecked and are acted on as truths, these beliefs begin to shape rules, policies and laws.

WHen even laws and policies reiterate racist beliefs, people and governments become emboldened to escalate the hate beyond hateful comments and thinking, they use these racist beliefs to justify violence towards individuals, property, etc.

When people are not held accountable to these acts of violence and hate, at the most extreme level, it can lead to genocide - the deliberate and systemic exterination of an entire people.

Today, we are going to zoom in even more, and look at Racism towards the Asian community. This is called Anti-Asian Racism.

Lets take a look at racism towards Chinese people in Canadian History Racism. Many people think it only started happening in 2019, when the covid-19 pandemic broke out. We heard about all sorts of examples of individual racism - (give examples). But racism towards Chinese people was always a part of Canada’s history. Let’s take a look - as I am going through the examples, think about how many you have heard about before or know of.

Let’s go back to the question i asked you all to think about - how many of these examples of anti-asian racism in Canada did you know about? Why do you think this is the case?

As you can see, racist beliefs and attitudes towards Asian people did not just show up suddenly during the pandemic. In fact, these racist beliefs have been around for a long time, and continue to show up unless we all do our part.
