The Michigan Merit Curriculum

  • Became law in April, 2006, and is one of the most comprehensive sets of high school graduation requirements in the nation. 
  • This state-wide program is designed to better prepare students for greater success and to secure the economic future of our state.
  • All students, beginning in the spring of 2016, will be taking the SAT, ACT WorkKeys, and the M-Step as part of the MME.

Planning the Schedule

  • The Process –
    • Classroom presentation by the middle school counselor in late February.
    • Students discuss classes and make final course selections at home with parents.
    • Students enter elective courses online in the middle school computer lab in early March.
    • Students take the Registration Form home - parents review and sign the form.
    • Students return the form to the middle school.

  • Six classes per day
  • Students take a .25 credit Seminar course
  • There are 2 semesters a year at the high school
  • Each semester class equals .5 credit, full year courses equal 1 credit.

The 2 elective classes may be a combination of semester and/or full year classes.

  • The Community Service Requirement :

Students must complete 20 hours of volunteer service hours anytime during high school. Service hours must be unpaid or for the benefit of non-family members.

  • Students must complete all state testing during their junior year.

Fall practices begin August, 2017

  • Eligibility to participate in Sports:
    • A Physical Exam dated after April 15.
    • Academic Eligibility: passing a minimum of 5 out 6 classes the previous semester and be passing at least 5 classes during the current semester.

Online Learning

  • Blended Courses: Grandville offers several blended courses for junior and senior students. These courses blend in-class instruction and online instruction.
  • Credit Recovery: Student may recover credit for courses through the online Odysseyware program. These options are arranged through the student’s counselor.
  • Seat Time Waiver: A limited number of seats are available for students who desire to complete all of their courses online, through the Odysseyware program. Students in this program will earn credits towards graduation, but do not receive grades. It is a pass/fail system.
  • Self-Scheduled Time & Place (SSTP): Students may elect two hours of online instruction at home and four hours in seat at GHS.
