Youth Peace Integration Forum (Y-PIF):

  • In August 2023, refugee and host community youth groups collaborated on peacebuilding for "Land Use Rights" in Uganda's Adjumani refugee settlement on Y-PIF, Facilitated by the Missionaries of Africa – Refugee Project & Jesuit Refugee Service.

  • Five monthly workshops facilitated youth dialogue, identified conflict root causes, and developed peacebuilding strategies for sustainable land use among refugees and the host community in response to tensions over land resource use management.

  • The youth-led Y-PIF initiative recognized the necessity of implementing a collaborative pilot program known as ”Learn & Earn” that aimed at establishing an "Agro-ecological Demonstration Site" in order to serve as a unifying platform for fostering learning, production, trust, comprehension, cooperation, peace, and a collective commitment to sustainable environmental practices within the community.

  • A group of 30 individuals comprising both youth refugees and members of the host community were trained in agro-ecological farming techniques.

  • Furthermore, Y-PIC promoted collaborative land use, peace, sustainability, and food security through outreach programs between the settlements and host communities.

  • The youth power has influenced some host community members in Adjumani to have shared land with refugees for collaborative farming practices. Hence, promoting peace and sustainability.

  • The collaboration between South Sudanese refugees and the host community under the “Learn & Earn Project” in Adjumani, facilitated by the Y-PIF, stands as a model for transforming tensions over land use rights into opportunities for cooperation, peace-building and environmental sustainability.
