Volunteer Hours update

  • Students are required to complete 40 hours of community service prior to graduation. Community involvement is an important educational opportunity that allows students to develop skills and gain experiences to become successful and contributing members of society now and in the future. Ineligible activities include:
  • Activities that take place during the time allotted for the instructional program on a school day. However, an activity that takes place during the student's lunch breaks or “spare” periods is permissible;
  • Some examples of eligible activities are, but not limited to:
  • coaching minor sports team; reading buddy or tutoring outside of school time; assisting at a charity event (e.g. walk-a-thon); participating in environmental projects (e.g. community clean up, tree planting); helping to organize a community event (e.g. summer fair or winter carnival); volunteering at a food bank; assisting at a seniors’ residence…

  • Tuesday, June 17th at 7PM at Flight Exec Centre
  • No tickets required
  • Gap, Gown and Tassel- that you keep- final day!
    • Pick up will be the week before Graduation
    • Arrive dressed in the cap and gown

  • Valedictorian Nomination- coming up
  • This is your chance to nominate the person who will represent your class at Graduation as the Valedictorian.
  • A separate form will come out to vote based on the nominees.
  • This student should have an acceptable academic record, have been involved in the life of the school, and be able to speak publicly to celebrate the experiences and accomplishments of the class of 2025.
  • Please note, only students that accept the nomination will appear on the final ballot.

Award Examples

  • Paula Fuller Memorial Award- A student who has made contributions in the Academic atmosphere of the school and outstanding service in the extra-curricular program of the school and/or service oriented work outside the school
  • Thames Centre 3D Award- Students (3 awards) who have brought honour to themselves and to their school by their continuous achievements in at least 2 of the following areas: Academics, Athletics and Activities
  • Darrell Kington Award- A student who is proceeding to post-secondary in the field of either police services; criminology; emergency services or police foundations; has community involvement; is respectful of others, honest and truthful, as well as conducts themselves with manners in and out of school
  • North Dorchester Agricultural Award- recognizes a student who has demonstrated an interest and respect for agriculture. Consideration will be given to students who have participated on their family farm, worked in an agriculture setting, participated in 4H, who have demonstrated exemplary community engagement, or who are continuing their studies in agricultural, environmental, event management, agribusiness, or mechanical post-secondary programs.
  • Thames Centre Co-op Award- a student who demonstrates reliability and initiative at the co-op workplace.

Scholarship Tips

  • Each scholarship has different criteria for both the award and for the documentation they need for the award. All TVDSB awards require a 200 word ‘blurb’ indicating why you are an appropriate candidate for the award. Others will require something similar and/or answers to additional questions or short essay responses.

Pro-Tips~Things to think about/include

  • Discuss motivations for taking a course, joining a club/team, volunteering, take a job, etc
  • Did you challenge yourself to try something new/out of comfort zone?
  • Did you persevere when something did not come easily?
  • What did you learn about yourself? How did you grow/change?
  • Did you have to overcome an obstacle?
  • What sets you apart from others?
  • What impact will winning this award have on your life/education?

  • Read the question or criteria closely
  • The criteria will give you tips on what the evaluators will be looking for/value in recipient

Basic Structure of a Short Essay (150-500 words)

Opening/Introduction: identify the main theme of the essay. Use this to set the tone. The objective is to get them to remember you, so start with a bang! Can be as short as one sentence. Can include an appropriate quote or question. Write this LAST.

Body: Highlight an experience that allows you to meet the criteria of the award. Stories win scholarships. Include a short anecdote that puts the reader in your shoes.Write this FIRST.

Conclusion: Summarize body,do not introduce new information here. End on a positive note and be forward thinking. Can be one sentence. Write this SECOND.

College & University Offers

  • College offers will be continuing now and into April
  • You must accept your offer by May 1st
  • University offers are continuing and many won’t come out until after midterm marks
  • You must accept your offer by June 1st
  • If after those deadlines you don’t have an offer, both colleges and universities will post which programs they have space in
  • Most deposits are due mid-june
  • Deferrals- depend on the school

Worried about Entrance Marks?!

  • Stay up to date on your current courses
  • Work with teachers to get a list of outstanding assignments
  • DON’T wait until midterm or the end of the semester
  • Extenuating circumstances?! Complete the additional information or extenuating circumstances form for your school
  • Final marks- can take awhile to process
  • Worried you aren’t going to make the grade- as your teachers for your final grade- complete summer school as necessary
  • Post-Secondary institutions DO NOT round up! e.g. if you have 78.8, they DO NOT round up to 79%. Watch your own grades to ensure you meet the post secondary requirements for your offer
  • 80%=480; 78.8%=472.8= difference of 7.2% overall
