GOAL 1: Research

Choice A:

“FS: Kentucky Research Tips …”

- In Kentucky Research Tips briefly review each of the paragraphs with bold items, to emphasize the key records to focus on.

- In Kentucky Record Finder explain each of the column headings and then scroll down through several of the categories, pausing on each row to identify the record types. Select one or two of the links that are listed, to show their pages, and then close the pages that were opened.

- In Further Kentucky Research click the “Kentucky Record Finder” link at the end of the first bullet point. The expanded Record Finder includes more categories, and it mentions more resources, such as newspapers, societies, and probate records.

“FS: Kentucky Overview”

- Watch the entire video, pausing and commenting as needed.

“FS: Step-by-Step Kentucky Research …”

- In Step 1 … scroll down to “What documents should be collected or copied?” and briefly review the types of documents listed, emphasizing the more unusual ones to consider.

- In Step 2 … scroll through the census research examples and recommend these for further study after the class.

- In Step 3 … scroll through the birth, marriage, and death research examples and recommend these for further study after the class.

Explain the legend for the county links (Name = FamilySearch, etc.) Select a county, such as Boone, and briefly show each of the links for that county.

GOAL 2: Archives and Libraries

Choice A:

- Scroll through the list of archives and libraries, focusing on the summary statements for each.

- Open the link for Kentucky city directories.

- Scroll down to the first bullet list in the article and describe the types of information commonly found in city directories.

- Scroll down to Kentucky City Directories; then scroll to Ashland and select “Ashland and Catlettsburg Directory, 1902.” Use the arrows in the lower right to scroll through pages, then select one to open and zoom, to show details.

Choice B:

- In Online Resources briefly review the table of links for online cemetery links in the state.

- In Kentucky Cemetery Records summarize the section for background information on the history of cemetery records in the state and how they can be used.

- In Browse Cemeteries by County select the first county link. Then select a cemetery in that county to see burial information for individuals.
