  • 1-2 letters to support applications
  • At least 1 from a core subject
  • You can use an elective teacher for your 2nd
    • Students seeking specialized majors (Art, Culinary, Music) should definitely look to have one of those subjects for their 2nd letter

  • School Requirements:
    • Every school is different (check websites)
    • Guidance counselor letter
    • Junior Year teachers reflects a full year in your most challenging coursework
    • Very few have specific subject requirements
    • Not all schools accept teacher letters
    • Some only accept 1

What do they write about?

  • Speak to your potential to grow, succeed and achieve in a college environment
  • Use examples from class to speak to character, academic strengths, rigor, contribution to class, how you approach challenges/setbacks
  • No teachers write anything negative, but can decline if they have a limit and/or if you have had issues

Counselor Recommendations

What do they write about?

  • Speak in more generally to academics, character, strengths, overall rigor and engagement at WHS and in the community
  • Draw on examples from interactions with you & about your specific interests/experiences during high school
  • Speak to special circumstances (if applicable)

IMPORTANT:

  • DON’T invite teachers/counselors to write through any application (Common App, Coalition, etc.)
  • No more than 2 WHS teachers may write for you

  • WHS transcript mailed home in July
  • Updated GPAs in Naviance in July
  • Write your CA essay
  • Keep exploring options
