What is a Modern Learning Environment?
A Modern Learning environment (MLEs) includes the physical space, social interactions and the teaching approaches used to enable effective learning.
MLEs are designed to meet the standard set out by the Quality Learning Spaces guidelines. Four key areas have been identified when creating a new space: acoustics, indoor air quality, thermal comfort and lighting. Our school is designed to the highest standard based on these aspects.
Modern learning environments are also called Innovative Learning Environments, Quality Learning Spaces or Flexible Learning Spaces. At Tamaoho School, they are spaces for optimum learning opportunities.
Why we believe in Modern Learning Environments:
The New Zealand Curriculum has changed significantly over the past decade. A learner’s ability to problem solve, be creative, work collaboratively and show grit are just as important in the curriculum as their ability to develop knowledge. As a result, learning spaces are more active places, providing learners with the opportunity to learn new skills, but to also put that learning into action. Learning spaces need to accommodate different ways in which learning can happen.
“An innovative environment is one that is capable of evolving and adapting as educational practices evolve and change – thus remaining future focused.” Ministry of Education
