Talking Points: You are going to get two different identity wheels today. (Hand out Appendix B – Personal Identity Wheel and Appendix C – Social Identity Wheel) You’ll being starting with the Personal Identity Wheel. You can see that the wheels above are a bit plain and boring, so your first task is to fill in the areas on the Personal Identity Wheel with a small doodle representing that identity or item for you. When you are done with that, you can move onto the Social Identity Wheel. You don’t have to write in anything if you want but take some time to think about the identities in the wheel and the questions in the center. On the Social Identity Wheel, race refers to inherited traits, while ethnicity refers to learned traits and culture. National origin refers to the specific country your ancestors came from.

CREATE YOUR OWN MINI-MURAL

Talking Points: Now is your chance to be an artevist. An artevist is somebody who combines art with activism. Activism is the collective actions one takes to catalyze or create political or social change.

As you’ll learn from Armando Silva in the third lesson, murals are culturally significant in many Hispanic, Latinx, and Chicanx communities. One great example is Chicano Park in San Diego.

You will now have 40 minutes to create a mini-mural. The mural must include an inspiring quote. You can choose one from the next slide from a Hispanic, Latinx, or Chicanx artist or leader or you can choose a favorite of your own. The mini-mural must represent one of your identities. Think about how this identity might be your secret superpower. The mural must represent a change you want to see in the world. How you represent these things is up to you. For this activity, you get to use whichever materials you like and are most comfortable with.
