HEALTHCARE AND EDUCATION PATHWAYS

  • Our collaborative chose to focus on Healthcare and Educational pathways due to the overall significant need of qualified healthcare professionals in the region and the alarming lack of highly qualified educators statewide.
  • Although the region is encompassed by two community colleges, and anchored by Cal Poly Humboldt to the north, Sonoma State University to the south, and UC Davis to the southeast, there is a weak culture of college-going students.
  • In addition to this challenge, one third of major employers in the region are in the areas target by the collaborative.

Certificate Programs at College of the Redwoods and Mendocino College

Objective: Middle School Students and High School Students can look at the different options, and classes they can take while in High School to potentially graduate with a Certificate when they graduate from High School, or get on path to completing a Certificate while in High School.

In order to understand access to higher education in the Redwood Coast area, an analysis on the current classes, certificates, and AA degrees offered in the neighboring community colleges of Mendocino College and College of the Redwoods will further provide leads on initiatives with more context towards strengthening career pathways in Healthcare and Education.

DUAL ENROLLMENT

  • Dual enrollment opportunities vary significantly between counties in the region,
  • It is important to recognize the benefit of increasing dual enrollment opportunities as a way to increase A-G rates and pathway participation.
  • HCOE has agreed to expand the course availability
  • Discussions have occurred with LEAs, College of the Redwoods, and Mendocino College about increasing opportunities and access to dual enrollment courses via in person instruction and distance learning instruction.
  • Extended education opportunities via Cal Poly Humboldt are also part of ongoing discussions.
  • Expansion will also occur through the virtual dual enrollment hub.

VIRTUAL RESOURCES HUB

The Virtual HUB will start taking shape in the Summer. Meetings have occurred to outline what the HUB will look like and the ideal location in the region

In November an initial meeting with our partner Blue Lake Rancheria has provided some insight to the possibility of resources and opportunities at the new location to be built for Healthcare.

The Conversations with HCOE have explored the possibility of a central HUB to start in late Spring 2023.

Identification of locations has started and discussions have started.

We anticipate that the ideal location for the region be finalized by Summer 2023.
