WHY IS MOVEMENT IMPORTANT?
3
ACCORDING TO a growing body of research, including a 2011 Study from Duke University, students need movement to increase concentration, which is one of the biggest indicators of success in students.
According to Edweek.org, “movement increases blood and oxygen flow, which positively affects cognitive development, physical health, and mental well-being.”
With the number of physical education programs being cut, it is necessary for classroom teachers to incorporate movement into their lessons.
4
Collaboration in the classroom is a key part of learning. Students need to learn to communicate ideas with their peers.
It is a well-known fact that the end product of mastery is being able to teach the content yourself.
Not only does collaboration allow students to process information and develop communication skills, but increases student understanding and mastery as students teach each other content.
5
This is great. We all know this.
But HOW???
6
KAGAN STRUCTURES
Developed by Dr. Spencer Kagan, Kagan Collaborative Learning structures bridge the gap between instruction, movement, and collaboration.
7
We have all been trained in kagan structures, but not everyone uses them daily!
Adding a movement-based Kagan structure to your lessons will increase engagement and learning in your classroom.
8
Yes, they take time away from teacher led instruction.
YEs it takes time to develop routines to teach students to move and collaborate
9
But the results are worth it!
10
Let’s start with a People Hunt!
11
This is a great way to build community, but can also be used for academics!
See my Opinions People Find as an eXample
12
Let’s Practice! We’ll start with a simple structure:
Timed Pair Share
13
14
This is a great way for students to Discuss and Synthesize what they’ve learned!
15
Let’s Add a Layer:
Hand Up Stand Up Pair Up
Movement is just as important as collaboratioN!
16
17
This can be used at any time to get students up and moving when they aren’t feeling motivated!
18
Quiz Quiz Trade: A great way blend of information and movement!
19
20
This is a great review for recall information or to prepare students for a new lesson!
21
Now you Try!

24
This is a great way to Integrate process based learning!
