Use evidence and timeline to answer the following question:Why did the youth get swept up in the Cultural Revolution ?

Chinese youth get swept up in the Cultural Revolution because of propaganda which showed students the benefits of joining the Cultural Revolution.

Through Mao’s ideas students felt empowered to help make a better future for China. Also, students would feel apart of something when they sang songs together. Students, being young and naïve, did not realize they were being used by Mao so he could regain power. Lots of students felt the Cultural Revolution was a great thing and wrote about it later in their life. As adults they looked back at how they began to boss the traditional people of power such as their teachers and parents. Looking back, these former Red Guard mention how they did what they did because Mao wanted them to do so. The students felt great doing this because they felt the students were making an impact and making a better future for China. Therefore, Chinese youth were swept up in the Cultural Revolution through a successful propaganda and indoctrination movement and joined because the youth thought they were helping China and didn’t realize students were being used so Mao could come back into power.

Use evidence and timeline to answer the following question:Why did the youth get swept up in the Cultural Revolution ?

Chinese youth get swept up in the cultural revolution because there are many propagandas that show students what benefits of joining the cultural revolution. The Little Red Book have all the ideas of Mao, telling the youth to join Red Guard and support the cultural revolution. From document A, it mentioned that “you young people, full of vigor and vitality, are in the bloom of life, like the sun at eight or nine in the morning” it tells students that the country needs them and it inspires them, also brain washed them.

From document B, the Red Guard song also makes students think that they play an important role in the revolution, in order “to be the successors to communism”. Another reason that the Chinese youth get swept up in cultural revolution because they don’t know history. They didn’t know about the great famine and the failture of Great Leap forward, so they just listen to Mao and become a part of revolution.

In document C and D, youth wrote dazibao to criticize elders and teachers, it totally against the tradition Confucianism. It gives the chance for students to revolt and not respect to their parents or teachers. They want to join the cultural revolution because everyone is doing it, they don’t want to be unqualified among peer, but in fact “they did not even understand what revolution was and how other people in the world really lived..”
