I can paint an abstract image inspired by the abstract artists we looked at and the photos we will see today.

So that I can communicate my understanding of color, painting and abstract art.

I will know I have it when I have a completed painting with no white space that is made up of just shapes.

Painting Manners

GOOD PAINTING MANNERS:

Wash your brushes until water is clear

Use plastic to cover table

Wash tables/spills/messes when finished

Tidy up room if finished early

Dump out water cups and clean sinks

REQUIREMENTS

You must cover all of the white space

You must have overlapping (3 layers) of colors and shapes

You must have a variety of SIZES of shapes (big,medium, small, really small)

Your painting must be ABSTRACT

(not from real-life)

In class activity STEPS

  1. Get a paper
  2. Tape the border
  3. Write your name on the back (pencil) and on the tape on the front (marker)
  4. Choose 1 color and a brush
  5. Paint a border >
    1. Choose whatever shape you want but make sure it is just a border and not covering too much white space
  6. Push your stools in and stand in front of your painting
    • This will only be fun if everyone can grab a different color and participate :)

In class activity STEPS

  1. You will start by travelling around your table, one painting to the LEFT.
    1. Take your paint and your brush with you
  2. On the new painting in front of you, paint 1 small organic shape >
  3. Now (with your paint and brush) travel one more painting to the left
  4. Paint 1 medium sized organic shape
  5. Travel 1 table UP (table 1 to table 2 table 3 to table 3 to table 4, etc)
  6. Everyone should be standing in front of a new painting with your same paint and brush.

In class activity STEPS

  1. On this painting paint a medium sized CIRCLE
  2. Travel around this new table, one painting to the left
  3. One this painting paint 1 really small geometric shape >
  4. Move one painting to the left
  5. On this painting paint 1 large geometric shape
  6. Move one more painting to the left
  7. On this painting, paint 1 medium sized squiggly line
  8. RETURN TO YOUR PAINTING with your name on it

Finishing YOUR painting

  1. Fill the rest of the white space on your painting. You can use your color or another color that you choose.
  2. Wait until your paint dries
  3. Introduce new organic shapes that overlap other shapes - add at least 3.
  4. Wait until your painting dries
  5. Introduce some lines, dots and empty shapes with black paint

Break down -

Monday march 14th - group painting day!

Tuesday march 15th - Finish your first layer of shapes and your border

  • Use big shapes to fill the white space
  • Change colors as much as you want
  • DO NOT: paint the entire background of your painting one color
  • DO NOT: layer over WET paint (it mixes and looks yucky)
  • DO NOT spend 5 minutes with 1 color and decide to be done (manage your time well)

Wednesday March 16th - Use medium shapes to OVERLAP

Break down -

Thursday March 17th - use small shapes to cover ANY leftover white space

  • Use this opportunity to add second layers to colors that need it AND to cover any overlapping lines that you dislike
  • OR use a small brush to add small shapes as a third layer!

Friday March 18th - detail day!

  • Spend at least half of class today using black paint to add detail and small elements like outlines, dots and lines.
