Types of Engineering

  • Electrical Engineering- Engineering discipline that generally deals with the study and application of electricity.
  • Mechanical Engineering- Engineering discipline that applies engineering, physics, and mathematics.
  • Civil Engineering
  • Civil engineers design, build, supervise, operate and maintain infrastructure projects
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Aerospace engineers typically specialize in one of two types of engineering

Villanova

Field Trip

During the early parts of this program we went to visit Villanova’s campus and take a tour of the construction site where the new dorms for Juniors and Seniors will be . During this trip we learned about the importance of base and structure, then we talked in depth about the design of the building and how each brick was laid in an unique way.

Takeaways

  • Importance of Structure
  • Design
  • Project Management and Necessity

Sewer System Simulation

Activities

In this activity we used cups and straws to create a sewage system and learned how it works. We learned how it worked by the constraints constructed in a city such as power lines and other buildings.

Airplane Terminals + Proportions

In this activity we learned how airports use the NATO phonetic alphabet to keep track of terminals and how they decide what paths airplanes take to lift off. We also learned how specific measurements of a part of a plane decide the wingspan, cockpit, etc.

Porosity Activity

In this activity we learned about the porosity and the ability for water to pass through different materials. We used cups with different rocks and minerals in them to see how water would pass through them. We also learned about the decisions that certain architects have to make when choosing the materials for different projects.

Activities

Balsa Wood Bridges

Groups of two were tasked with designing the best structural bridge using balsa wood and wood glue.

  • In doing this we learned…
    • The Design Process of Architects
    • Design Tactics
    • The Strongest Shape: Triangles
    • How to fix flaws in our designs (Distribution of Force)
    • How much things may change from the original design

Closing Thoughts …

  • The ACE program has affected us by:
    • Introducing paths to an engineering related field.
    • Helping us see how engineering affects society.
    • Expanding our knowledge outside of engineering.
    • Showing how different disciplines of engineering interact.
