2025 CLUB BREWING SHOWDOWN

  • The Kansas City Bier Meisters are excited to host this year's version of the ONE Beer to Rule Them All club competition. This is a competition originally started by the Topeka Hall of Foamers with the idea of creating a fun event for clubs to interact. The competition is open to Kansas and Missouri Clubs only.
  • Please see the attached flier for information and share with your club members. We look forward to tasting your club's best British beers from BJCP categories 11,12 and 13. Each club will determine its top 3 entries and send those to be judged October 25th at Transport Brewing in Gardner, KS (time tbd-but anticipate AM judging). Clubs are encouraged to send a representative judge to help determine the ONE!
  • Entry fee per club is $20 to be sent via Paypal @KCBM. The entry fee will cover the cost of a traveling trophy for the winning club and hopefully some refreshments for the judges. The winning club will put on the competition next year with the opportunity to choose the style.
  • Please ship or drop off entries to Steph Butler by 10/23. I will deliver them to Transport to be kept cold ahead of the judging event.

Keg Maintenance

&Carbonating Your Beer

25 of 48

Check Kegs for Leaks

  • Pressurize keg with serving pressure
  • Spray bottle with soapy water or sanitizer
    • Around lid
    • PRV
    • Posts
  • Look for small bubbles

Pouring from container also works

26 of 48

Replacement Parts

  • O-Rings
    • Posts (Pin Locks vs Ball Locks)
    • Dip Tubes
    • Keg Lid
  • Poppets
  • Pressure Relief Valves

Replace yearly for regular maintenance to prevent leaks

27 of 48

Color Coded Post O-Rings

  • Alternate colors by year
  • Blue for beverage, Green for gas
  • Fairly cheap in bulk
  • 50 for $12 at valuebrew.com

Remember!

Pin Locks and Ball Locks will use different post o-rings

28 of 48

Keg Lube

  • Food Safe
  • Apply to all keg o-rings
  • Especially useful on keg lid o-ring
    • Helps create air tight seal

29 of 48

Repairing Loose Handles

  • Clean metal and rubber
    • Automotive brake cleaner works great
  • Scuff up the metal and rubber
    • Low grit sandpaper or emery cloth
  • Apply adhesive and cure
    • 3M Black Super Weatherstrip Adhesive
    • Gorilla Glue
    • Marine Epoxy
  • Fill keg with water or apply cinder block

30 of 48

Balance?

Calculate correct line length.

  • Resistance - 3/16” ~ 3 psi/ft ¼” ~ 0.85 psi/ft
  • Rise - Center of Keg to tap in Feet

Beer #1

ABV: 5.4%

IBU: 25

Fermentables: Pilsen, Caramunich, Munich, Caramel Pils, Aromatic

Yeast: Lager

Hops: Perle, Hersbrucker

From the brewer: This is a smooth, malty lager fashioned after the famous Octoberfest beers in Munich. Our Octoberfest was only the second specialty beer we ever brewed, and the original batch was first tasted back in 1989. To this day, it continues to be one of our most popular brews

40 of 48

Appearance

Dark gold to deep orange-red color. Bright clarity, with solid, off-white, foam stand.

41 of 48

Beer #2

ABV: 6%

IBU: 32

Fermentables: Munich, Pale, Pilsner

Yeast: Lager

Hops: Magnum, Opal, Perle, Spalter Select, Tettnang

From the brewer: This modern Festbier leans into a rich, smooth malt backbone with notes of fresh-baked bread and honey. Traditional German hops provide balanced bitterness and herbal-spicy aroma, rounding out the crisp, clean finish. Prost!

42 of 48

Aroma

Rich German malt aroma (Vienna/Munich malt). A light to moderate toasted malt aroma is often present. Clean lager aroma with no fruity esters or diacetyl. No hop aroma. Caramel aroma is inappropriate.

43 of 48

Beer #3

ABV: 5.9%

IBU: 27

Fermentables: Pilsner, Munich, Caramel Malts

Yeast: Lager

Hops: Vanguard

From the brewer: Our fall seasonal beer is a medium-bodied, dark amber brew with a malty flavor and well-balanced hop character.

44 of 48

Flavor

Initial malty sweetness, moderately dry finish. Toasted maltiness. Hop bitterness is moderate, and noble hop flavor is low to none. Balance is toward malt, though the finish is not sweet. Noticeable caramel or roasted flavors are inappropriate. Clean lager character with no diacetyl or fruity esters.

45 of 48

Beer #4

ABV: 5.8%

IBU: 19

Fermentables: Pilsner, Munich

Yeast: Lager

Hops: Herkules, Hallertauer Tradition

From the brewer: This full bodied golden Oktoberfest lager is the pinnacle of German brewing: wonderfully mellow with a balanced harmonious taste. It has a strong note of malt and the pleasant fragrance of hops.

46 of 48

Mouthfeel

Medium body, with a creamy texture and medium carbonation. Smooth. Fully fermented, without a cloying finish.
