Merci de ne PAS viser l’exhaustivité et de sélectionner les activités/faits marquants

1. Binary Evolution: we performed 1D hydrodynamical simulations of binary systems from their formation to their merging, using the stellar evolution code MESA, to identify the evolutionary paths of the systems leading to the gravitational wave events BBH GW151226 and GW170608, by exploring the parameter space of initial mass, period, metallicity and the mass transfer efficiency during various accretion phases. The merger rate computed from these simulations are compatible with the ones observed by LIGO/Virgo.

Published paper: Garcia, Simaz-Bunzel, Chaty, Porter & Chassande-Mottin, 2021A&A...649A.114G

Press releases: CNRS press release; LabEx press release

Wide-audience article: article in The Conversation.

2. Natal Kicks: we studied astrometric data of 35 X-ray binaries from the Gaia satellite to infer the amplitude of the natal kick imparted to the compact object in these X-ray binaries, when undergoing their first supernova event.

Submitted paper: Fortin, Garcia, Chaty, Chassande-Mottin & Simaz-Bunzel, A&A subm.

3. Machine Learning: we currently use the numerous simulations performed to interpolate the results with Machine Learning algorithms, to produce faster estimates of evolutionary paths, along with the nature of gravitational wave events progenitors detected by LIGO/Virgo during their next observing runs (probably from summer 2022). This work is led by Julien Marchioro, supervised by Eric Chassande-Mottin.

4. Identification: we identify new X-ray binary systems using optical/infrared observations from the Very Large Telescope (VLT), and maintain an updated list of X-ray binaries, compiling all new information obtained in the past 15 years.

Submitted paper in prep.: Bouchet, Chaty, Fortin, A&A subm.

5. ENGRAVE: We are now 4 members of the LabEx project to be part of the ENGRAVE collaboration (aiming at using VLT facilities to perform on-the-fly follow-up observations of gravitational wave events detected by LIGO/Virgo ): Eric Chassande-Mottin, Sylvain Chaty, Alexis Coleiro and Francis Fortin.

Production scientifique de l’équipe

  • Passages aux conseils scientifiques de labo (3 ans)

  • The committee maintains the priority that APC should keep its leading role in the field, now that GW has become a truly fundamental messenger for understanding the Universe.

  • The committee recommends high priority for the activity in the phase of Advanced VIRGO new observational runs. APC commitment to LISA and the position of its group is well in line with their strong know-how and certainly should not be reduced.

  • (APC is) in charge of the ET technical design report, in particular in the squeezing working group, should be properly supported.

Evolution anticipée de l’équipe (3-5 ans)

  • Attente vis-à-vis de l’IN2P3

Overall: Gravitation group

  • Small but very active group
  • Strong record of getting external funds
  • Wide expertise (with overlaps!): hardware, experimental design and simulation, data analysis, science interpretation, testing GR, GW modelling
  • 7 interns this year, 3+ PhD students starting this year: GW Astronomy is a rising star -> Importance to train new generation
  • Very productive : ~20 papers/year
  • Gravitation group led two proposals within IN2P3 Prospectives
  • Very strong tights with Theory group: sharing supervision (2 PhD students), co-authored papers
  • Links with High energy group (population, multimessenger, Athena)
  • Aiming at building the strong group for the future multimessenger and multiband (LISA+ET) GW astronomy, big accent on the scientific interpretation of GW observations
  • Continue a strong involvement in Advanced Virgo, to contribute to its upgrades, data exploitation of O4 and O5 and prepare the post-O5 phase
  • We can/want to play an important role for the preparation of Einstein Telescope (design, optics and squeezing, data analysis preparation)
  • Leading in setting up Distributed Data Processing Center (LISA ground segment) and AIVT within LISA Consortium.
  • One of the strongest LISA data analysis group world-wide
  • LISA is a very integral mission: symbiosis of instrumental science, LISA simulator, developing of data analysis pipeline and methodology on the scientific data exploitation
  • Strong support/connection with CNES

Evolution anticipée de l’équipe (3-5 ans)

  • Attente vis-à-vis de l’IN2P3

  • Young researcher (CR) on scientific interpretation of GW observations: testing GR, inference of astrophysical and cosmological models. Overlapping research between ground- and space-based GW astronomy.
  • Postdocs on Virgo/ET instrumental science
  • MCF to replace A. Petiteau
  • PhD students to maintain continuity in bringing up new researchers in GW astronomy.
  • Our request is strongly endorsed by CS of IN2P3

ET and LISA both are important for the future of GW astronomy, one should not be preferred on the expense of another!
