My chest and belly move in and out when I breathe.

Take a deep breath and blow up a balloon as much as you can. Close its mouth and compare it with the balloons that your classmates have blown up. Are all the balloons the same size?

Not all the balloons we inflated are the same size.

  • With the help of a classmate count how many times you breathe in one minute.
  • Walk in place for a few minutes and count again. What do you notice?

At rest I breathe 35 - 40 times per minute.

After running I breathe 45 - 50 times a minute.

The air we inhale has more oxygen and less carbon dioxide than the air we exhale. With breathing, oxygen passes into the blood and carbon dioxide is exhaled.
