Statistics Concepts

  • The purpose of statistics is to approximate many items with a relatively small set of characteristics
  • For our purposes this means treating any large dataset as normal then applying basic statistical tools

Single Variable Statistics

  • A normal curve has
    • Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode)
    • Measure of spread (variance, standard deviation)
  • Skew is the difference from the normal curve

Single Variable Statistics

  • A different view of the data is a cumulative frequency chart
  • Can be used to visualize spread
  • Outliers are 1.5 IQR

Bivariate Statistics

  • When matching two variables, use bivariate statistics
  • Correlations can be linear or nonlinear
  • Correlation coefficient between -1 and 1

Predictions Using Normal Curves

  • Given a normal curve the area can be interpreted as a probability
  • Normalize the standard deviation and mean using
  • Can go backwards given the probability to find the corresponding z-score
