WHAT IS HOUSEMANSHIP IN NIGERIA

BRIEF HISTORY

Uk- After medical act of 1950�Nigeria’s adoption – In Nigeria, the housemanship year was formally introduced in the late 1960s to early 1970s as part of aligning medical training with British standards. It became mandatory under the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act of 1963 (amended in 1969), which required one year of supervised practice before full licensure.

DEFINITION OF HOUSE JOB

• Housemanship is a one-year compulsory clinical rotation undertaken in Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)-accredited hospitals by both Nigerian-trained and foreign-trained medical doctors. It is designed to provide supervised, hands-on training across core clinical specialties, enabling new doctors to consolidate their medical knowledge and skills in real patient care settings. Upon successful completion, doctors become eligible for full registration with the MDCN, allowing them to practice independently in Nigeria.

HOW THE HOUSEMANSHIP PORTAL WORKS

The housemanship portal, managed by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), was launched on April 1, 2021, according to the MDCN. It's a centralized system for posting newly registered doctors and dental surgeons to accredited hospitals for their mandatory one-year housemanship training. 

CREATING ACCOUNT IN THE PORTAL

• First you must be inducted into MDCN
• Your Provisional License Must be approved @ portal.mdcn.gov.ng ( It takes about 2wks to one month to be approved after induction)
• Note the issue date of the License e.g 15/08/2025
• Use your portal email as Username
• Choose a simple password like; Medjourney@2028
• Have your folio number ready
• Have your Bank account Ready (GT bank, Access bank, UBA, Sterling Bank etc
• Have your BVN ready
• Resize your passport to this size height: 499 px width: 476 px or copy your passport @portal.mdcn.gov.ng and use that.
• Then head to this website https://housemanship.mdcn.gov.ng/auth/register
• Click submit to finish your Registration.

• Can create account in the houseamanship portal with having provisional license approved -NO
• How often does the housemanship portal get uploaded with new centers- this occurs every 2 months.
• On that day should I start checking the portal midnight -NO, Start in the morning say 9am, except otherwise stated

• Can I start house job in a center and later transfer to another center to continue -NO, not possible. However, you can resign from one center and start afresh in another center.
• Am I allowed to get multiple center at same time. -NO
• Can I move from a center in the portal to a non-portal center like State, private or Military hospital -Yes you can.
• How long before you get your first salary. It takes about 2 months for portal centers
