Salim - Case Study

After living in initial accommodation and being moved around for a year, he got Leave to Remain in 2016 and moved to Wakefield because he had family members there.

His friend told him that he could join college to improve his English and find a job, so he enrolled to Entry 1 ESOL at Wakefield College. He studied for 3 years and got his Entry 3 qualifications. During Covid 19 he couldn’t join online classes - he went back onto a waiting list for more than 1 year. When the college re-opened he was offered a place on an L1 Speaking and Listening course. He didn’t go to any other ESOL providers to look for classes, because there wasn’t anything available. The one place he knew about closed after Covid.

It’s very important for him to get qualifications as he wants to go to university to study IT. He doesn’t know what qualifications he needs to get into university.

Once he has a degree, he wants to work in an office as IT support.

He has also studied Level 1 door support - security at Dominion Training. It was a 1 month course. He has also done Risk Assessment with Woodspeen Training in Pontefract. This is part of training to be a carer. He started the course but didn’t complete it as he found a job. Currently he is working 16 hours per week as a chef, doing morning and afternoon shifts and going to evening classes to get his L1 ESOL qualification..
