Focus on Results

A focus on results is one of the three pillars of a Professional Learning Community. An effective focus on results is not all about end-of-year statewide data. Instead, it means systematically collecting, analyzing, and taking action each and every day on data collected by our teachers and teams. When educators develop an authentic and systematic focus on small results, the big data--such as WY-TOPP and ACT outcomes--follows naturally.

In SCSD2, we own our data. All of it. We celebrate the hard work of our teachers and students, and we continue our focus on day-to-day results to achieve higher levels of student learning down the road.

Strong state results are not the point of our work. Instead, they are the outcome of excellent teaching and systematic teacher collaboration.

ACT Commentary

In 2021, Sheridan County School District No. 2 once again ranks near the top compared to other Wyoming districts in ACT performance. Specifically, SCSD2 tied for 2nd among the state’s twelve largest school districts.

We value student achievement on the ACT because it is a strong indicator of college readiness, and because scoring well helps students and their parents finance education beyond high school. The ACT is a culminating assessment for district students, and our results are truly an indication of programmatic strength across all grades, K-12.

As we analyze long-term trends dating back to the first statewide ACT administration in 2013, we see a consistent gap between the performance of SCSD2 students and the performance of the state as a whole. The gap is clearly a result of the focused, collaborative work carried out by our educators and their strong partnerships with students and families. As always, our educational teams collaborate to identify specific areas of strength and growth within the data, and to make curricular adjustments to better prepare students for future success on the ACT.

WY-TOPP Commentary

Sheridan County School District No. 2 students have again performed at the top across Wyoming on the WY-TOPP assessments. Our students’ success on WY-TOPP is tied to two key factors. First, our teacher teams work diligently to ensure that their instruction and interventions are highly focused on the most important standards. Next, our schools are dedicated to ensuring that students who need additional support or a challenge actually receive targeted instruction. This approach clearly pays dividends, as SCSD2 once again performed at the top.

While SCSD2 outperformed all other districts in aggregate, there are clear areas of strength and areas for growth revealed in the data. Here are questions we ask across the district when working to identify areas of celebration and focus: 1) Where do we see the highest/lowest levels of overall student achievement? 2) How do 2021 scores compare to those from 2019? 3) Is each individual class of students making growth from one year to the next? Because we were able to see live WY-TOPP data as students took the test last spring, principals and teacher teams immediately set about answering these questions. You will hear from each school when principals present their improvement plans at the November and December board meetings.

WY-TOPP Golf Score

The golf score analysis allows us to compare our aggregate or overall performance on WY-TOPP to other Wyoming districts. A golf score is calculated by determining each district’s ordinal place in the state for every subtest at every grade level, including:

  • 3rd grade ELA & Math
  • 4th grade ELA, Math, & Science
  • 5th grade ELA & Math
  • 6th grade ELA & Math
  • 7th grade ELA & Math
  • 8th grade ELA, Math, & Science
  • 9th grade ELA & Math
  • 10th grade ELA, Math, & Science

We then sum these 19 ordinals to determine each district’s golf score. The lower the score, of course, the better.
