Mounting holes are too far apart to screw directly into wall studs.

Studs are standardized to be 16in apart and these holes are 17.5 in apart.

This thing is very heavy and is meant to hold more weight as a coat rack, so I don’t feel comfortable attaching it to drywall.

The Problem

Two horizontal pieces of wood are attached to the wall, screwed into the studs.

The coat rack rests on top of the two horizontal pieces of wood and is screwed into the drywall. The idea here is that two pieces of wood will take the bulk of the weight, rather putting that stress on the drywall screws.
